A method (200, 400) for reducing contaminants in wastewater from a manufacturing process. Water is fed into a processing tank (102) that has been used to process one or more materials having negatively charged particles that become contaminants in wastewater. The water becomes mixed with the contaminants forming wastewater which is discharged into a wastewater tank (13). A water treatment composition is added to the wastewater tank (13) containing the wastewater. The water treatment composition has a coagulant having one or more water-soluble multi-valent inorganic salts or mixtures thereof. The coagulant attracts and neutralizes the negatively charged particles in the wastewater to form insoluble matter. The insoluble matter is removed to obtain treated wastewater with reduced contaminants.

Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) events require certain minimum treatment, before discharge, according to EPA regulations. However, these events are infrequent, and CSO treatment systems remain idle most of the time. Tertiary filtration is typically used to polish off the secondary treated water in order to remove suspended matter, phosphorous, etc. Tertiary systems are usually designed to handle design flows and remain active most of the time. These are two independent unit operations requiring major capital investment and operational expense. According to this invention an interchangeable system is able to switch a tertiary treatment reactor back and forth between two applications ensuring seamless operation, smooth transition and significant cost savings for treatment facilities.

The present application provides a waste water preconditioning system for limiting mercury concentrations in a waste water stream resulting from treatment of a flue gas. The waste water preconditioning system may include a wet flue gas desulfurization system for treating the flue gas with an aqueous alkaline slurry, a sulfite detector to determine the concentration of sulfite in the aqueous alkaline slurry, and to produce the waste water stream with a mercury concentration of less than about five micrograms per liter. The waste water preconditioning system also may include a waste water treatment system downstream of the wet flue gas desulfurization system.
