The invention relates to a method for isolating poly- or monomethyl alkanoic acids of the general formula (I), wherein R is the same or different and represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon or a methylol group that is produced from the corresponding polymethylol alkanals or monomethylol alkanals of the general formula (II), wherein R has the meaning indicated above, by oxidation with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. The method further comprises the following steps: a) crystallization, followed by solid/liquid separation (B), thereby obtaining the acid as the first crystallized product (2a) and a mother liquor (3), b) producing in the mother liquor (3) another crystallized product (2b), and removing the resulting mother liquor (3) in another solid/liquid separation (C) from the crystallized product (2b), and c) disposing of the resulting acid-depleted mother liquor (3).

The invention relates to a method for producing poly- or monomethylol alkanoic acids of general formula (I), R being the same or different and meaning a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon with 1 to 22 C-atoms or a methylol group; from the corresponding poly- or monomethylol alkanals of general formula (II), R having the meaning above, by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. The poly- or monomethylol alkanal of general formula (II) used in the reaction has an overall content of metal ions of groups 3 to 14 of the periodic table of up to 5 ppm. The method is used especially for producing dimethylol allkanoic acids from the corresponding dimethylol alkanals, especially for producing dimethylol butanal or dimethylol propanal.

A process for the preparation of 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid (I) and 3-hydroxy- gamma -butyrolactone (V) thereof from a 3-leaving group substituted pentose source is described. In particular, the process relates to the synthesis of (R)-3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid and (R)-3-hydroxy- gamma -butyrolactone from a 3-leaving group substituted L-pentose sugars. The process uses a base and a peroxide to convert the pentose source to the chiral 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid compound. The chiral 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid can be further converted to 3-hydroxy- gamma -butyrolactone by acidification. The chiral compound is useful as a chemical intermediate to the synthesis of various drugs and other products.

New titanium zeolite Beta catalysts which have been found to be useful as catalysts for the oxidation of organic compounds using organic hydroperoxides as oxidation catalysts. They are particularly useful as ring opening oxidation catalysts and may be used to produce adipic acid from cyclohexane.
