The present invention relates to flame retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compositions, and more particularly to flame retardant thermoplastic polyurethane compositions comprising non-halogen flame retardants. The TPU compositions are useful for applications where high flame performance, and optionally low smoke properties, as well as high tensile strength are desirable, such as wire and cable applications, film applications, molding applications, and the like. This invention also relates to processes to produce the non-halogen flame retardant TPU compositions and processes to produce wire and cable jacketing from such compositions.

The present disclosure provides a wire or cable comprising a flame retardant-free thermoplastic inner sheath and an outer sheath composition comprising, based on the weight of the composition, (a) 10 wt% to 90 wt% of a TPU based resin, (b) 5 wt% to 90 wt% of a metal hydrate, (c) 2 wt% to 50 wt% of a nitrogen-based phosphorus flame retardant, and (d) 2 wt% to 50 wt% liquid phosphate modifier, wherein the outer sheath is in contact with the insulation covering, and wherein the outer sheath has a thickness from greater than zero to 0.8mm.

This invention provides flame retardant compositions that provide flame retardation for a variety of applications, such as replacement of flame retardants containing halogens. The flame retardant used in many applications contain brominated or chlorinated compounds. There is a ready market for flame retardants that do not contain halogens, which this invention addresses. Thus, it is important that halogen free flame retardant containing compositions can be made at high loadings. Ethyleneamine polyphosphates are excellent flame retardants for polymers, but a sticky surface can occur at high loadings due to moisture absorption limiting their use.

A new liquid reagent is disclosed in form of an ionic liquid containing phosphorous acid and a tertiary amine. The reagent can be used as a replacement of phosphorous acid, where the new reagent as a liquid reagent can be handled using usual equipment for handling liquids and the dosing of the reagent can therefore be controlled more precisely in industrial plants compared to phosphorous acid, which is a solid at ambient temperature. The new liquid reagent is particular suitable for the synthesis of bisphosphonates.
