A process for the production of a yarn is disclosed, the process comprising providing a bundle comprisingcontinuous filaments of a thermoplastic polymer, contacting the bundle with a sliver comprising fibres of a heat resistant material to form a mixed bundle, and applying a gas jet to the mixed bundle to distribute the fibres of the heat resistant material in the bundle. Also disclosed are yarns comprising filaments of a thermoplastic polymer and fibres of a heat resistant material, wherein the fibres are distributed between and among the filaments. Preferably, the heat resistant material is a non-thermoplastic polymer, especially an aramid. Yarns according to the invention find use in technical fabrics especially transmission belts.

A micro mechanical system for measuring stress and strain in micro- and nano-fibers tubes, and wires as well as for measuring the interface adhesion force and stress in nanofibers and nanotubes embedded in a polymer matrix A sample is attached between freestanding platforms in a MEMS device Relative translational movement between the platforms is created and motion of the platforms is imaged with an optical microscope Mechanical and adhesion properties of the sample are determined by applying a digital image correlation algorithm to the image data.

The present invention is directed to a high surface area fibers and an improved filter composite media made from the same. More specifically, the composite media preferably comprises a winged-fiber layer having high surface area fibers for increased absorption and strength and a meltblown layer for additional filtration. In one preferred embodiment the high surface area fibers have a middle region with a plurality of projections that define a plurality of channels, which increases the surface area of the fiber. In one preferred embodiment, the high surface area fiber has a specific surface area of about 140,000 cm 2 /g or higher and a denier of about 1.0 to about 2.0. The high surface area fiber of the present invention is made using a bicomponent extrusion process using a thermoplastic polymer and a dissolvable sheath.

A monofilament with longitudinally oriented grooves and fabrics made thereof having reduced air permeability, wherein the reduced permeability is achieved without using additional coatings or stuffer yarns. Bicomponent monofilaments made from these grooved monofilaments using solution or wire coating have improved coating adhesion and may also include a conductive coating. In addition, the grooved bicomponent monofilaments may include a wear-indicating mechanism. Also disclosed are monofilaments with grooves formed in its surfaces. Advantageously, these grooved monofilaments exhibit improved adhesion to "sheet-grip" coatings, as compared with circular monofilaments. In addition, fabrics comprising these grooved monofilaments demonstrate improved air handling. The grooved monofilaments may be incorporated in a fabric as MD yarns, CD yarns, or both CD and MD yarns.

A pile fabric having a pile length of 5 mm to 100 mm which is manufactured by knitting multifilaments having a single fiber finess of 3 to 30 denier and a total finess of 100 to 750 denier and having a twist frequency of 150/m or less, and preferably containing 50 wt % of a flat cross section fiber having a L/W (flat ratio) of the cross section thereof of 2 to 25. The pile fabric has a straightness of pile similar to that of natural mohair and provides a mohair-like pile fabric having a good balance of soft touch feeling and strength of a pile, and can be obtained with a reduced processing loss by employing a double stitch knitting texture in the knitting step mentioned above.

Polyester yarn for weaving without twisting or sizing and method for the manufacture of such a yarn. The invention also concerns, in particular, a multifilament yarn comprising polyester, characterized by a cohesion factor (CF) greater than or equal to 15 knots/meter, a knot quality such that the cohesion factor is at least equal to 4 knots/meter upon testing at a tension of 50g, and a dynamic thread/metal friction coefficient less than or equal to 1.35, combined with a friction coefficient regularity corresponding to a regularity factor defined below, which is less than or equal to 0.35 and a rate of size deposition on the yarn of at least 0.4 % combined with a regularity of the rate of deposition on the yarn corresponding to a regularity factor, defined below, which is less than or equal to 0,20 %. The yarn is used, in particular, as the warp yarn on weaving machines.

A method for the manufacture of a hybrid yarn (26) which uses a stretch-breaking process to blend two or more different types of fibre, one of which is a reinforcing fibre. The fibre tows (2, 14), for example a tow of carbone filaments and a tow of thermoplastic filaments, are fed together into the stretch-breaking zone (at 22), broken by stretching between two pairs of nip rollers (12a, 12b: 20a, 20b), drafted and then processed into a yarn (26). Thus well-blended hybrid yarns are produced which can be of a variety of deniers, including low deniers. The yarns can be used in the formation of composite products.

Disclosed are fibers comprising identification fibers which can be used for tracking and tracing fibers, yarns, fiber bands, and/or articles comprising the fibers through at least part of the supply chain. Each identification fiber exhibits at least one distinct feature. Each group of distinguishable identification fibers can exhibit a taggant cross-section shape, a taggant cross-section size, or combination of the same taggant cross-section shape and same taggant cross-section size. The distinct features and the number of fibers in each group of distinguishable identification fibers can represent at least one supply chain component of the fibers. The distinct features can be detectable in an article comprising the fibers.
