Abstract:
When a two-stroke combustion engine (10) runs in the no-load or underload mode with intermittent fuel injection, besides the injection nozzles (12) being activated intermittently, the throttle (18) is opened more than is usual on transition into the no-load or underload mode and the fuel is simultaneously injected at a constant angle of aperture and flow. Said process ensures reliable ignition of a weak mixture in the no-load or coasting mode; thus the energy consumption and exhaust production are limited in said modes and the engine runs in a cost-effective manner.

L'invention concerne un moteur à combustion interne à essence et à allumage commandé comprenant au moins un cylindre (1), une culasse (2) obturant le cylindre (1), un piston (3), une chambre de combustion (4), un moyen d'injection (5) d'essence, un moyen (6) d'allumage destiné à produire une inflammation du mélange air-essence dans la chambre de combustion, des soupapes d'admission (7) et d'échappement (8) obturant sélectivement la chambre de combustion (4), une pompe (8) d'injection destinée à fournir a l'injecteur (5) de l'essence sous pression, caractérisé en ce que la pression de l'essence fournie à l'injecteur (5) dépasse 250 bars et en ce que, au moins dans une plage de fonctionnement du moteur sujette au phénomène de cliquetis, la quantité d'essence délivrée par la pompe (8) à l'injecteur (5) pour un cycle de combustion est fractionnée sous la forme d'une pluralité d'injections partielles et distinctes, et en ce qu'au moins une des injections partielles est délivrée avant l'inflammation de la charge dans la chambre de combustion (4) par le moyen d'allumage (6), et au moins une injection partielle est délivrée après cette inflammation
Abstract:
A method of operating a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine in a four-stroke cycle. A first amount of fuel is introduced into each of the cylinders (10) earlier than 45 degrees before top dead center of a combustion stroke. Air significantly in excess of that providing a stoichiometric amount of oxygen is also introduced into each cylinder to produce a first mixture upon introduction of the fuel, which mixture is ignited to produce a first combustion event. Subsequent to substantial completion of the first combustion event, but prior to top dead center in the same combustion stroke or shortly after top dead center in the expansion stroke, a second amount of fuel is introduced into each cylinder without additional air to form a second mixture which is ignited to produce a second distinct combustion event.

Conventional direct injection internal combustion engines will not completely ignite and burn relatively lower-cetane-number fuels such as 100 percent methanol or ethanol because the fuel spray injection pattern usually cannot carry or propagate a flame to all the injected fuel which is typically made up of individual fuel streams which are separated by pockets of fuel-deficient intake air. The present fuel combustion system (10) includes a fuel ignition-initiating device (26) such as a glow plug (70) and apparatus (98, 102) for interconnectedly contacting and continuously bridging all of the individual fuel streams (66) with an auxiliary cloud (94) of well-atomized fuel. In this manner, a flame initiated by the fuel ignition-initiating device (26) is rapidly and completely propagated via the auxiliary cloud (94) of fuel to all the individual fuel streams (66).
