A measuring device having a tape for taking angle and length measurements, and capable of providing a user discernible indication of the angular orientation of its tape relative in any given extended measuring state relative to a predetermined orientation, for example, the horizontal. The measuring device preferably is capable of reading out one or more measurements associated with any given extented measuring state, and transmitting them to a remote device. The measuring device preferably has one or more finger depressible soft feature keys each programmable with a user specified function downloaded from a host computer.

An electronic tape measure (10) comprises a flexible, fabric tape (11) frictionally engaging an optical encoder shaft (44) which rotates as the tape is withdrawn or retracted, and for desired measurement positions the encoder output is supplied to a computer. The tape (11) has an end bar (14) and a friction grip saddle (16) to define respective end positions. For measuring a circumferential dimension, the bar (14) fits in hooks (21) of the saddle (16). A recess (33) is provided at the exterior of housing (32); when the tape (11) is withdrawn from the housing so that the bar (14) and saddle (16) just fit in the recess, the known length of tape enables a calibration measurement to be undertaken.

A tape measure (10) including an electronic keypad (20) and display (24) for recording and viewing measurements is disclosed. The keypad includes up (44) and down (46) buttons, save (48) and recall (50) buttons, a set button (46) and a clear/on button (40). The up and down buttons are used to selectively increment and decrement numeric values representing units for measurements, which are displayed on the display. Measurements are entered and displayed in feet, inches, and sixteenths of an inch in the English system, or in metric units. After manually measuring a distance using a coiled measuring tape, a user presses the up and down buttons to specify the distance measured, then presses the save button to store the measurements. The recall button is used to recall previously stored measurements.

A garment inspection system uses a digital measuring tape measure to measure and check dimensions of produced garments. The measured dimensions are transmitted to a computer via a wireless radio frequency connection between the digital tape measure and the computer. A software program is installed in the computer in a stand-alone or networked environment to read, store, analyze and manage the data and inspection results.

A two-dimensional coordinate measuring device for measuring the coordinates of a point on a plane with a simpler work so as to use the measurement values as data, a shape specifying device, and a marking device are disclosed. The measuring device includes a measuring device body (300), a measuring string (390) that can be drawn out of the measuring device and drawn into the measuring device, and a pointing body (200) to which the end of the measuring string is attached and which points the point the coordinates of which is be measured. The measuring body (300) includes a measuring string draw-in mechanism (320) to draw the measuring string into the measuring device body, a length draw-out change sensor (340) for measuring the length from a reference position to the point pointed by the pointer as the length of the measuring string drawn out of the measuring device body, an angle change sensor (330) for measuring the angle between a predetermined reference direction and the direction in which the measuring string is drawn out, and means (380, 370) for determining length and angle from the changes.

The invention relates to a method and to an arrangement for measuring length or angles, in which method use is made of a tape-shaped or disc-shaped transmitter element (1) which is provided with markings and is designed to be pulled out of and pushed into a housing (6), casing or the like, the latter being provided with at least one sensor (4, 5) for detecting the markings on the transmitter element, and with an electronics unit (33) for converting signals from the said sensor into length measurements or angle measurements. The sensor detects the markings on the transmitter element, which markings are in the form of embossings (2) in a repeated pattern of embossings, which form a micro-corrugated, ribbon-shaped zone (3) on the transmitter element, which micro-corrugated zone is moved past the said sensor which registers and counts the number of elevations and/or depressions in the said micro-corrugated zone, which elevations and/or depressions pass the sensor from a certain starting position to a certain measurement point, which is converted in the electronics unit to a measurement value of the length or angle in question.

A mesuring device with visual indicators and a low pressure spool release mechanism. The device has two sensors which when located against an object independently illuminate visual indicator. One of the sensors is extractable from the measuring device in order to place the sensor against one of the objects. The sensors are linked by a flexible elongate member used for measuring the distance between the objects. A button is provided to lock the sensors at the required distance apart.
