A low profile switch or keypad has one or more touch pads (14) formed integrally with and raised from a surrounding membrane or key mat (15) of elastomeric material by a wall (30) of resiliently deformable material of thickness and angle relative to the mat (15) so that the wall (30) can flex under finger pressure on the or each pad (14) without deflecting the surrounding membrane. The underside of each pad (14) is formed with a convex contact pad (29) dimensioned in relation to the pad diameter and travel and the length of wall (30) so that the pad (29) makes surface to surface contact with conductors (12), (13) of an underlying circuit board (10). The mat (15) is held in tension to the board (10) by a peripheral lip (16) into which the board (10) fits. The keyboard uses only two interfitting parts and needs no bezel but provides a tactile response to key depression.

The invention concerns a glass keyboard comprising a surface (4) consisting of a flexible thin glass pane (2) and at least a base material glass pane (6) whereof the opposite surfaces comprise each an electrocondutive layer (8, 10). The tiered electroconductive layers (8, 10) are maintained at some distance from each other by a spacer (12). Said electroconductive layers (8, 10) come into mutual contact when pressure is applied to the flexible thin glass pane (8), at the substantially localized pressure load zone. In the keyboard, the flexible thin glass pane (2) is made up of a drawn glass sheet.

The present invention relates to a keypad applicable to a portable telephone, a remote controller, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) , and the like, and more particularly, to a method for manufacturing an integral type touch pad and a keypad comprising the integral type touch pad manufactured by such a method, which makes it possible to reduce the thickness of the keypad remarkably and discern the letters and figures formed on the key top even in the dark place, by forming the key top, the base, and the front housing integrally on a synthetic resin member such as acrylic resin, polycarbonate, or ABS resin, and molding photoluminescent pigment on the letters and figures formed on the key top, and concurrently which makes it possible to provide a keypad with integral type touch pad made to be high quality good visually by the inherent glaze of the synthetic resin and the vacuum metallization (VM) treatment.

Disclosed is a pressure switch (1) with at least two substrate dilms (8) separated by a spacer (6), the films having an electrically conducting coating on at least one side. To ensure that the switch remains operational even in the event of large variations in pressure and temperature, both substrate films are made of glass, the cover plate (14) being thinner than the lower supporting plate (12). With a cover film made of laminated glass, the pressure switch (1) can also have a pressure sensor (114) actuated by means of a pressure-transmission core (112).
