Abstract:
A distributed antenna array with a centralized data hub for determining the presence and location of RF tags has been disclosed. This antenna array centralizes electronics and distributes the RF to zones in a facility to greatly reduce the expense of recurring components for monitoring RF tags. A single BRT/hub with multiple antennas attached to transmit and receive ports is used to cover an entire facility. Large facilities are covered by a small number of the BRT/hub combinations. The BRT/hub has transmit antennas coupled thereto, preferably by co-axial cable, that transmit signals to a portion or all of the RF tags and all or a portion of them modulate and reflect the RF signal to a particular receiving antenna. The receiving antenna then returns the RF signal with tag data to the BRT/hub, preferably by co-axial cable. Also disclosed is a RF backscatter tag that cleanly switches a resonant aperture antenna on and off, thereby greatly increasing the mark-to-space ratio of the backscatter data. This enables tags to be detected by the BRT at much greater distances.

A radar reflecting target comprises a plurality of reflecting elements (10) spread along at least one linear physical dimension of the target, the elements (10) being differingly spaced in the direction normal to said dimension so that respective retro-reflections by the elements of radio frequency energy from a remote source on a line of sight at an angle to said dimension, have differing phases and tend to cancel each other out. The invention may be applied to single or two dimensional surfaces on such vehicles as ships or aeroplanes.

A solar control film having a frequency selective surface is provided. The frequency selective surface includes two layers. The first layer and the second layer which includes a metal surface. The frequency selective surface provides at least one UV absorptive material that permits substantial transmission of visible light. The hybrid material (10) comprises at least one grid panel (20) of thickness t 1 having holes (25) traversing said thickness t 1 , at least one polymer composite material (30) of thickness t 2 filling at least partially the holes (25) of the at least one grid panel (20), said at least one polymer composite material (30) including a polymer matrix (40) and conductive particles (50) dispersed into said polymer matrix (40), characterized in that the internal surface of the holes (25) of the at least one grid panel (20) is metallic.

Leaky wave antennas that can be reconfigured in pattern and/or polarization by exploiting the characteristic of metamaterial structures loaded with variable capacitor and inductors employ a Composite Right Left Handed (CRLH) unit cell with two independent DC biases used to actively change the group delay of the transmission line and the polarization of the radiated field while preserving good impedance matching. Different degrees of pattern and polarization reconfigurability are achieved by cascading multiple of these unit cells along a straight line, a circular line or a zigzag line while preserving high gain for all the antenna configurations and good impedance matching.

A device for receiving and/or emitting an electromagnetic wave having a free space wavelength λ 0 comprised between 1 mm and 10 cm, comprising a medium (11) of solid dielectric material and the free space wavelength λ 0 corresponding to a wavelength λ inside the medium, a plurality of conductor elements (12) incorporated inside the medium and spaced apart from each other of a distance lower than λ/10, and one antenna element (13). The conductor elements form small loop elements. A tuned conductor element among the conductor elements has a first end at a distance from the antenna element which is lower than λ/10, and has an electric resonance frequency corresponding to the wavelength λ.
