The retaining plate has one or more openings to allow the finely ground feedstock to pass upwardly therethrough but to prevent any grinding media from passing through the retaining plate. Introduction of the feedstock may be through one or more hollow support rods that locate the retaining plate in the desired location within the grinding chamber. The support rods are locked into position when the retaining plate is properly located.
