Abstract: A method of fastening a joining insert to a wind turbine rotor blade element (10), the method comprising the following steps: • providing a wind turbine rotor blade element (10) of a fibre-reinforced composite material, the wind turbine rotor blade element (10) comprising a joining surface (12) and a blind hole (18), the blind hole (18) having a proximal end (20) at the joining surface (12) and a distal end (22) within the fibre-reinforced composite material, • forming at least one channel (24) through the fibre-reinforced composite material, the at least one channel (24) connecting the distal end (22) of the blind hole (18) to a channel opening (26) at an inner and/or outer surface (14, 16) of the wind turbine rotor blade element (10), • placing a joining insert in the blind hole (18), • filling a space (82) between the joining insert and the blind hole (18) with a liquid plastics material in a vacuum infusion process, wherein said channel opening (26) is connected either to a liquid plastics material supply line (74) or to a process suction line (72), • curing the liquid plastics material.

Abstract: The method of bonding a first object (1) to a second object (2) uses a connector, the connector having a first sheet portion and a second sheet portion (32). The first sheet portion has at least one outwardly protruding first attachment portion (33), and the second sheet portion has at least one outwardly protruding second attachment portion (34). The connector (3) further has a spacer between the first and second sheet portions. For bonding, the first and second objects (1, 2) and the connector (3) are positioned relative to each other so that the connector is placed between the first and second objects. Then the first and second objects (1, 2) are pressed against each other while mechanical vibration energy impinges on the first and/or second object until a first flow portion of thermoplastic material of the first object in contact with the first attachment portion(s) and a second flow portion of thermoplastic material in contact with the second attachment portion(s) become flowable allowing the respective attachment portions (33, 34) to be pressed into material of the first and second object, respectively. After re-solidification of the flow portions, a positive-fit connection between the first and second objects via the connector results. The spacer defines a width (w) of a gap between the first and second objects (1, 2) after bonding.

The step of arranging the one or more shear webs within the first shell half comprises arranging at least one telescopic support member (80) between the inside surface (38b) of the first shell half (38) and the lateral surface (62) of at least one of the shear webs (70), wherein the telescopic support member (80) comprises an actuator (82) for adjusting the length of the telescopic support member.

One or more guide element (74) are fastened to at least one of the lateral surfaces of the shear web such that the guide element extends laterally from the shear web to form a receiving space (88) between the guide element (74) and the shear web (55). The shear webs are then lowered into the first shell half such that the free end (81) of the support frame (80) is received in the receiving space (88) between the guide element (74) and the shear web (55).

Abstract: Systems for forming thermoplastic components are disclosed. A system may include a mold including a first portion and a second portion engaging the first portion. The first portion and/or the second portion may receive material for the component. The system may also include a compressive device positioned adjacent to and contacting the first portion of the mold. Additionally, the system may include a control system in communication with the compressive device. The control system may be configured to displace the compressive device to apply a compressive force to the first portion of the mold, and impose a predetermined pressure on the material for the component. The control system may also be configured to heat the first portion and/or the second portion of the mold.
