The present invention is directed to photoinitiated cationic epoxy compositions, which show a delayed onset of cure resulting in controllable "open times" for the end user consumer. These compositions are activated by exposure to electromagnetic radiation, such as UV radiation with a wavelength in the range of 254-405 nm, but show a commercially meaningful "open time" and then cure even in shaded zones to achieve a desired final adhesive strength.

At least partially curing the resin by subjecting the resin to a first cure treatment (36) and at least partially curing the resin by subjecting the resin to a second cure treatment. A plurality of fibers are located adjacent each other so that a plurality of valleys (34) are formed between the plurality of fibers along an outer side of the reinforcement. The resin is cured to retain the valleys in the outer side of the reinforcement. The outer side of the reinforcement is adhered to the structural member (44). An apparatus including a fiber locating mechanism adapted to retain the peaks and valleys during curing of the resin without rigidly confining the outer side of the reinforcement.

Dabei wird im Durchlauf auf einer ersten Seite (7') der Kernlage (7) eine Klebstoffschicht aufgebracht und die erste Seite (7') der Kernlage (7) mit einer ersten Decklage (3) zusammengeführt, auf eine zweite Seite (7'') der Kernlage (7) eine Klebstoffschicht aufgebracht und die zweite Seite (7'') der Kernlage (7) mit einer zweiten Decklage (5) zusammengeführt, die Decklagen (3, 5) werden mit der Kernlage verpresst. Hierdurch lassen sich der manuelle Aufwand bei der Herstellung, mögliche Verzugserscheinungen infolge des Klebstoffs sowie der Klebstoffverbrauch erheblich reduzieren.

A monolithic ceramic waveguide laser body is made by forming and grinding two or more plates 1, 2 of alumina ceramic to produce internal 5, 6, 7, 8 and external features otherwise impossible to fabricate in a single ceramic body. The plates are bonded together by use of glass frit or by self-friting diffusion bonding methods to achieve a vacuum tight enclosure. The ceramic surfaces to be bonded have an "as ground" finish. One internal structure created by this method includes a channel 6 of dimensions from 8 to 1.5 mm square or round that confines an RF or DC electrical discharge and comprises a laser resonator cavity. The channel can be ground to form a "V", "U" or "Z" shape folded cavity. Another internal structure is a gas reservoir 7 connected to the resonator cavity. Various other important features are described that can only be created by this method of building a laser. The plates are bonded together in a furnace at temperatures ranging between 450 degrees C and 1700 degrees C, depending on the method used.

A laminate for use as sarking in buildings comprising a layer of plastics and a layer of metal foil bonded to the plastics by a layer of water based adhesive having subtantially no free moisture. The adhesive is dried to form a contact adhesive having no free moisture prior to bonding of the layers. The plastic material can be made from a formulation of LLDPE, a metallocene catalysed LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE and a fire retardant. The laminate can be produced by an apparatus which comprises feed means (11), adhesive application means (40), adhesive drying means (80), means for forcing the films together (60), rolling means (70) and tensionning means. In another embodiment there is an apparatus for forming a three layered laminate.

A knitted terry-cloth elastic base fabric (4) is used to make a laminate (2), the base fabric (4) having a cotton pile (8) and an elastic support (6) made of two different synthetic yarns. Two layers (16, 18) of polyurethane resin are deposited on an anti-stick support web and set to form a skin, and a layer (14) of polyurethane resin having adhesive properties is deposited on the skin layer (18). The base fabric (4) is applied to the adhesive layer (14) whilst the latter is still liquid, after which the adhesive layer (14) is set. Finally, the skin (16, 18) is detached from the support web. The layers of polyurethane resin are substantially impermeable to water and permeable to water vapour. Pieces of the laminate are joined together by ultrasonic welding to melt and re-set the respective skin (16, 18) and adhesive to (14) form a water-tight join and form a made-up article. During the welding, at least one yarn of the base fabric (4) does not melt.

A wetting repellent lacquer is printed in a predetermined pattern on the decorative upper surface. The wetting repellent lacquer covers only parts of the decorative upper surface. A wear layer of a UV or electron beam curing lacquer is then applied on top of the decorative upper surface which UV or electron beam curing lacquer is repelled from the parts of the surface being covered by the wetting repellent lacquer whereby a surface structure is achieved.
