Abstract:
A process for selective oxidation of at least one dimethylbiphenyl compound to the corresponding biphenyldicarboxylic acid, where the dimethylbiphenyl compound is supplied to at least one reaction zone together with an acidic solvent, an oxidizing medium, and a catalyst comprising cobalt, manganese, and bromine. The dimethylbiphenyl compound and oxidizing medium are contacted with the catalyst in the at least one reaction zone at a temperature of 150 to 210°C to oxidize the dimethylbiphenyl compound to the corresponding biphenyldicarboxylic acid. The supply of dimethylbiphenyl compound to the at least one reaction zone is then terminated, but the supply of oxidizing medium and catalyst is continued with the at least one reaction zone at a temperature of 150 to 210°C. A reaction product comprising at least 95 wt% of the biphenyldicarboxylic acid based on the total weight of oxidized dimethylbiphenyl compound is then recovered from the at least one reaction zone.
Abstract:
Abstract:
Processes are described for purifying a biphenyldicarboxylic acid product containing one or more impurities, particularly at least formylbiphenylcarboxylic acid. In the processes, at least a portion of the biphenyldicarboxylic acid product is contacted with an alcohol under conditions effective to esterify at least part of the biphenyldicarboxylic acid and at least part of the formylbiphenylcarboxylic acid and produce an esterification effluent containing biphenyldicarboxylic acid diester and formylbiphenylcarboxylic acid ester. At least part of the biphenyldicarboxylic acid diester is then separated from the esterification effluent by crystallization. Advantageously, a polyester product may be produced from the separated biphenyldicarboxylic acid diester.
Abstract:
The subject invention provides a method of reducing the presence of toxic intermediates of amyloidosis from islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in a patient, comprising administering a compound to the patient a compound having the structure: (Formula I) wherein R1 and R2 are each independently hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl or hexyl, or R1 and R2 are linked so as to form a cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl, or cyclohexyl ring; wherein R3, R4, R5, R6 are each independently hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine; and wherein R7 is hydrogen, phenyl, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, hydroxyl, amine, carboxylic acid, C1-C6 alkyl carboxylate, amide, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl or hexyl, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof, so as to thereby reduce the presence of toxic intermediates of amyloidosis from islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in the patient.
Abstract:
The invention concerns processes for the synthesis of a compound of the formula: wherein: R1 and R2 are each, independently, C1-C12 alkyl, CO2R3, OR4, R5(OR6), or C6-C18 aiyl; R3 -R6 are each, independently, C1-C12 alkyl or C6-C12 aryl; and n and m are each, independently, O or an integer from 1-5; said process comprising: - contacting a compound of the formula H0-R7-0H with BH3 and a compound of the formula in the presence of a nickel-containing catalyst to produce a first product, where R7 is a C2-C12 hydrocarbon group and X is a halogen, OMs or OTs; - contacting the first product in situ with a compound of the formula: in the presence of a nickel-containing catalyst to produce a compound of formula I, where Z is a halogen.
Abstract:
Disclosed are methods for preparing polyaromatic carboxylic acids or salts thereof by reacting an aromatic boronic acid with a haol-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid or salt thereof.
Abstract:
This disclosure relates to methods for producing purified aromatic esters useful as plasticizers, to the purified aromatic esters, and to polymer compositions containing the purified esters. The purified aromatic esters can be produced by esterifying carboxylic acid with methyl or ethyl alcohol, separating the resulting methyl or ethyl esters from the carboxylic acid and any byproduct impurities, and then transesterifying the methyl or ethyl esters with C 4 to C 14 alcohol to produce the purified aromatic esters. Additionally, precipitation, filtration, and wash steps can be employed to purify the carboxylic acid, the methyl or ethyl alcohol, and/or the aromatic esters.
