Abstract:
A polymer useful in forming coatings for articles is provided. The polymer is an acrylic copolymer formed as the reaction product of a plurality of monomers which include an alkyl (meth)acrylate, a quaternary amine (meth)acrylate, a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, an N-vinyl lactam, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and a fluorinated (meth)acrylate. The polymer is formed in the presence of surfactants, preferably by sequential polymerization of two separate monomer mixtures. To form a coating, the polymer is blended with an elastomeric material such as nitrile rubber latex. The resulting coating is useful both as a print coating for substrates used with ink jet printers and as a coating for rubber articles.

A water-borne latex paint system, comprising a base paint, an associative thickener, a colorant compound, and at least 0.1% dry weight of a block copolymer ABCBA composition. For the ABCBA polymer wherein the A component is a hydrophobic group A, the B component is a hydrophilic polymer B and the C component is a low molecular weight hydrophobic group C. The ABCBA-type polymer includes an A component which is a monomer unit containing a moiety selected from the group consisting of an alkyl group, an aryl group or an alkyl aryl group, the B component includes poly(ethylene glycol), and the C component is selected from the group of diols consisting of poly(tetrahydrofuran), poly(caprolactone) poly(carbonate), ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and 1,2-dodecanediol. The block copolymer acts as a viscosity stabilizer in the presence of associative thickeners.

A biocidal film-forming composition, preferably a paint, is disclosed, comprising hydrated lime, alkaline potassium salt, and a non-ionic polyolefinic latex resistant to hydrated-lime induced coagulation and phase separation. Also disclosed is the method of making certain such composition wherein hydrated lime is admixed with a non-ionic polyolefinic ester latex with agitation and continuing such agitation until hydrolysis of the ester is substantially completed and rheology of the composition is stabilized and the incidence of gelation is eliminated.

The invention relates to an aqueous elastomer coating composition and to objects that have been coated with said composition. According to the invention, said aqueous elastomer coating composition consists of the following: (a) a polymer latex consisting of an elastomer, such as fluorine rubber, hydrated or carboxylated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber and/or acrylate rubber; (b) mineral fillers such as silicates/silicone oxides, silicic acids, pyrogenic silicic acids and/or carbonates, oxides, hydroxides of bi-to tetravalent metal cations; (c) cross-linking chemicals such as aminic, peroxidic, bisphenolic or sulfur-based cross-linking systems; optionally, dispersing agents and/or emulsifiers, organic and/or inorganic pigments, defoaming agents, age-resisting agents, heat sensitizers, thickeners, wetting agents, propelling agents, foam-stabilizing agents, coagulants, thixotropy agents, acid catchers such as MgO, Ca(OH)2, ZnO, PbO or hydrotalcite and adhesives; and (e) water, preferably in a demineralised form, as the dispersion medium for the elastomer coating compositions.
