The efficacy of a preconditioner, in the removal of an oily contaminant from a substrate such as feathers, animal or human skin, textiles or soil, is determined by contacting the. oily substrate with the preconditioner; contacting the preconditioned oily substrate with finely divided iron material to adsorb a portion of the oily contaminant; removing the iron material magnetically; and determining a mass or proportion of oily contaminant removed. The preconditioners tested or screened in this way can include, for example, olive oil, canola oil, and methyl oleate. A computer database of efficacies can be compiled from the results.

The present invention relates to a process for cleaning and/or washing down and/or feathers comprising: (a) mixing the down and/or feathers with a solution of an alkyl polyglucoside; (b) optionally adding simultaneously or sequentially a solution of a Group 4 metal salt to the mixture of (a);and (c) removing excess liquid; and (d) optionally drying the down and/or feathers. The invention also relates to down and/or feathers prepared according to such a process. The invention additionally relates to a down and/or feather washing and/or cleaning composition for rendering the down and/or feathers hydrophobic comprising a solution of an alkyl polyglucoside, optionally a solution of a Group 4 metal salt, and a water-repellent treatment. The invention further relates to a kit for cleaning and/or washing down and/or feathers and rendering the down and/or feathers water repellent comprising (i) a closed vessel containing a solution of an alkyl polyglucoside; (ii) optionally a closed vessel containing a solution of a Group 4 metal salt; and (iii) a closed vessel containing a water repellent treatment.

The invention concerns a screening method and machine for size sorting in a fluid (9), into two categories, of materials with different volumes and density close to that of the fluid used after total immersion in said fluid. Mechanical stirring (6) means upstream of the sieves, optionally combined with the use of surfactants in an aqueous medium, maintain said materials to be size-sorted suspended in said fluid. The fluid circulates from upstream to downstream of the sieves. Only the materials below a certain size, volume or weight, maintained suspended in the fluid, pass through the size-sorting sieves (15). The sieves are immersed in the fluid and do not slow down the liquid flow passing through them. To obtain further size-sorted categories, it is possible to organise the inventive process sequentially. The invention is useful in poultry processing plants, processing feathers and down for padding purposes, purifying foreign matter in pasty mixtures and the like.

The invention which is the subject of this application relates to a method of treating feathers which can be used to form feather filled articles such as pillows, duvets and the like and the feather filled articles themselves. The treatment and selection of the feathers to be used is such that the articles can be washed in hot wash and even boil wash cycles, without the subsequent performance and life of the articles being unduly affected. Thus the advantages of feather filled articles in comparison to those articles which use manmade fibers are obtained and the life of the same are maintained, which is not possible with conventional feather filled articles.
