A self-propelled vehicle (10), such as a loader (10), has a hydrostatic drive that includes hydrostatic motors (16A, 16B) to drive ground engaging wheels (14) under control of the operator. The rotational speed of the motors (16A, 16B) is proportional to an operator control input provided to a controller (24) which in turn regulates the flow of hydraulic fluid under pressure from a pressure source (18A, 18B) to the motors (16A, 16B). The regulation of the hydraulic fluid under pressure to the motors is achieved by utilizing electrical displacement control pumps (18A, 18B) that will provide a flow of fluid to a connected motor (16A, 16B) in direct proportion to an input signal as the flow source. The motors (16A, 16B) are fixed displacement motors, and when the wheels (14) tend to overrun as the vehicle (10) rolls down a hill or incline, the motors (16A, 16B) will act as pumps. The movement of the wheels (14) is sensed (28A, 28B) to provide a signal to the controller (24) to adjust one or both of the electrical displacement control pumps (18A, 18B) to provide a balancing counter pressure at the high pressure side work port (17A, 17B, 19A, 19B) of the associated motor (16A, 16B) to insure that the vehicle (10) will not creep or roll when it should be stopped.

According to the invention, an additional open hydraulic circuit (9) is used in which a second hydraulic engine (22) and a third hydraulic engine (24) are linked with a second hydraulic pump (5) via a supply pipe (11) and a control valve (21). Said second hydraulic engine (22) and said third hydraulic engine (24) drive the vehicle wheels (23, 25) of a second vehicle axle (36).
