Abstract: The inspection of welds, particularly spot welds, is not performed by direct determination of properties of the weld itself but the area around the weld whose optical properties of the surface are not affected by previous welding is heated and subsequently the spatial distribution of the time course of thermal radiation from the surface in the weld area is measured and it is determined whether the measured values fall within the range of values predetermined for a sufficiently high-quality weld.

The apparatus also includes an alert unit (104) for providing alerts on detecting the occurrence of a defect.
