A speech encoder that analyzes and classifies each frame of speech as being periodic-like speech or non-periodic like speech where the speech encoder performs a different gain quantization process depending if the speech is periodic or not. If the speech is periodic, the improved speech encoder obtains the pitch gains from the unquantized weighted speech signal and performs a pre-vector quantization of the adaptive codebook gain GP for each subframe of the frame before subframe processing begins and a closed-loop delayed decision vector quantization of the fixed codebook gain GC. If the frame of speech is non-periodic, the speech encoder may use any known method of gain quantization. The result of quantizing gains of periodic speech in this manner results in a reduction of the number of bits required to represent the quantized gain information and for periodic speech, the ability to use the quantized pitch gain for the current subframe to search the fixed codebook for the fixed codebook excitation vector for the current subframe. Alternatively, the new gain quantization process which was used only for periodic signals may be extended to non-periodic signals as well. This second strategy results in a slightly higher bit rate than that for periodic signals that use the new gain quantization strategy, but is still lower than the prior art's bit rate. Yet another alternative is to use the new gain quantization process for all speech signals without distinguishing between periodic and non-periodic signals.

The amplitude voltage of a signal input to a level shifter can be increased and then output by the level shifter circuit. Specifically, the amplitude voltage of the signal input to the level shifter can be increased to be output. This decreases the amplitude voltage of a circuit (a shift register circuit, a decoder circuit, or the like) which outputs the signal input to the level shifter. Consequently, power consumption of the circuit can be reduced. Alternatively, a voltage applied to a transistor included in the circuit can be reduced. This can suppress degradation of the transistor or damage to the transistor.

This addresses the problem of how the system infers intent at an access point. The security system no longer has to infer intent from possibly poor information concerning the location and movement of the users. Instead, the security system can simply determine gross proximity to the access point and then wait for the activation input.

A specified object in still images or video may be detected using a sliding search window technique, applied to the original image and its downscaled versions, in order to detect objects of different sizes. At each scale and each position of the sliding window, the technique may use a boosted tree classifier to determine whether the window contains the object. It may exit earlier if some intermediate sum falls below the certain threshold. To accelerate object detection, hybrid features are used in different boosted chains. For first boosted chains, the fastest features may be applied and then, after more complex (but slower) features and for the last few chains, the most powerful feature (but most computationally expensive) is used. This strategy may improve the speed of detection because for a majority of checking windows, only first boosted chains are used and so only the fastest features are calculated in some embodiments.

Provided are an anodic oxide coating for an aluminum-based material, a treatment method therefor, and a piston for an internal combustion engine, the anodic oxide coating having both high heat insulation properties and high corrosion resistance, high durability and high impact resistance, and high water-repellent and oil-repellent functions. The treatment method includes the steps of: forming a second anodic oxide coating 2b by application of AC-DC superimposition electrolysis to an aluminum-based material 1; and, after the step, forming a first anodic oxide coating 2a by application of direct-current electrolysis to the aluminum-based material 1, wherein the second anodic oxide coating 2b is formed on the first anodic oxide coating 2a.

A method of applying a coating system to a substrate includes applying a first layer of a high hardness and high modulus of elasticity with an added metal to the substrate, applying a second layer of the high hardness and high modulus of elasticity in combination with the added metal to the first layer. A percent by volume of the added metal in the second layer is lower than the percent by volume of the added metal in the first layer. The method also includes applying two or more intermediate layers formed from an applied mixture of the high hardness, high modulus of elasticity material and a metal material between the first layer and the second layer.

The present application provides Calcia-Magnesia-Alumina-Silica (CMAS) (or molten silicate) resistant thermal barrier coatings (TBC). The coatings include elongate growth domains of non-equiaxed, randomly arranged overlapping grains or splats. The elongate growth domains include overlapping individual, randomly distributed splats of tough and soft phases. In some embodiments, the elongate growth domains are formed via air plasma spray. In some embodiments, the tough phases are at least partially stabilized zirconia and/or hafnia compositions, and the soft phases are CMAS (or molten silicate) reactive or resistant compositions. Within each elongate growth domain, the mixture of the tough and soft phases act together to limit penetration of CMAS and also provide sufficient domain toughness to minimize cracking forces produced during crystallization of infiltrated CMAS. The soft phases may react with the CMAS and increase its melting point, increase its viscosity, and reduce the destabilization of the tough phases.

A titanium slab for hot rolling comprised of a titanium slab obtain by smelting commercially pure titanium, wherein even if the breakdown process is omitted, the strip shaped coil after hot rolling is excellent in surface properties and a method of smelting that titanium slab are provided. The titanium slab according to the present invention is a titanium slab for hot rolling obtained by smelting commercially pure titanium including the β phase stabilizing element Fe, wherein the formation of coarse β phases is suppressed by making the average Fe concentration down to 10 mm from the surface layer of the surface which corresponds to at least the rolling surface of the titanium slab 0.01 mass % or less. A titanium slab obtained by smelting commercially pure titanium can be obtained by cooling until the surface becomes the β transformation point or less, then reheating it to the β transformation point or more, and gradually cooling from the slab surface layer.
