A vacuum-assisted hot plate is used to precondition webs (13), such as paper webs used in the manufacture of corrugated paperboard (12). The vacuum-assisted preheater(10) has a web supporting and heating surface separated into four sections, namely: an input section, a central upstream section, a central downstream section, and an output section. The sections are separated by three vacuum channels that are sized wide enough to prevent clogging from paper dust. The central upstream section and the central downstream section have convex surfaces. Vacuums applied to the vacuum channels provide a normal force to pull the traveling web against the heated surface, whereas the convex configuration of both the central upstream section and the central downstream section provide a normal force pushing on the paper web in the opposite direction. The result is effective positive contact of the traveling web against the heated source, thereby promoting effective heat transfer.

A synchronized flute double wall corrugated paperboard web is produced in a corrugating apparatus utilizing cooperatively operated single facers (11,12) to provide an intermediate single face web with corrugated media on both faces, and then combining outer liners (50,51) to both corrugated media immediately prior to on entry into the double backer (13) utilizing a glue applicator (43) that precludes glue line disturbance. The system may also be operated to produce conventional double wall board or single wall board utilizing either of the single facers. A synchronized flute double wall board provides enhanced strength and may be run on this corrugator at the same speed as single wall board.

Certain parameters in a high speed order change in a corrugator, including a small gap between orders and the relative lengths of the old and new order sheets, require altered order change and discharge routines on the downstacker conveyor system in order to prevent edge butt between the last sheet of the old order and the first sheet of the new order. Alternate order change and order discharge routines, which are automatically implemented by the downstacker system controller, include accelerated movement of the old order shingle out of the downstacker vacuum conveyor to outrun the incoming first sheet of the new order or, altemately, allowing the first sheet of the new order to overrun the tail end of the old order and utilizing, if necessary, a device to divert the lead edge of the first new order sheet upwardly to allow the shingle to be reestablished.

An on demand ink mixing system for a flexographic or similar printer utilizes a chambered doctor blade (11) with a chamber divided by a flexible bladder (30) to form ink chamber and a pressure chamber. Ink use is coordinated with print run length, and ink mixing and the collapse of the ink chamber to essentially zero volume are coordinated to coincide with the end of the run. The flexible bladder is also utilized in the operation of the ink cleaning system to move cleaning solution through all portions of the supply system and printer contaminated by ink mixed for the run.

An active vibration damping system (e.g. an active tuned mass damping system) uses phasor techniques for accommodating excessive phase shifts in system components (e.g. amplifier and actuators). Optimal control techniques are used to determine preliminary coefficient values for the controller model. These preliminary coefficients are scaled to account for differences in units and the scaled coefficients are then used to determine phase angle and relative phasor magnitudes. For each component of the control force on the tuned mass, the respective phasor is shifted to accommodate a known phase shift in the system while maintaining the same relative phasor magnitude for each component. The phase-shifted coefficient values are then scaled to return the coefficients to the original units, and these coefficients are used in the controller to generate the command signal to drive the actuator that provides the control force on the tuned mass. This technique can accommodate substantial phase shifts without rendering the system unstable.

A corrugator double backer includes a web holddown apparatus that provides both heat and a holddown force to the upper surface of the paperboard web to maintain the web in intimate drying contact with the lower heating units without the use of a conventional driven holddown belt. A heated holddown mat which is longitudinally and laterally flexible is provided by a series of gcncrally parallel, somewhat flexible, closely spaced heating tubes which are suspended above the web in the heating section in catenary fashion in the direction of web travel. Lift devices on one or both ends of the mat of tubes can vary the amount of mat contact with the web and, therefore, the heat and load imposed on the web. The tubes are steam heated and have flat low friction, high wear resistant lower surfaces which lie directly atop the corrugator paperboard web running thereunder.

The labyrinth path in the corrugating nip of a single facer is substantially reduced by utilizing a small diameter corrugating roll captured between a larger diameter conventional corrugating roll and a backing roll arrangement. The smaller diameter corrugating roll is captured to prevent bending thereof under corrugating loads. The corrugator may be operated at high speeds without the adverse increase in labyrinth path and web tension characteristic of a pair of large diameter corrugating rolls.

A fabricated hot plate assembly, particularly suited for use in a corrugated paperboard double facer utilizes elongate angular steel components (17,18,20,84,51,52,78,80,81), which may be configured from a wide variety of shapes and assembled using molten metal connecting processes, such as welding and brazing, or high strength, temperature resistant adhesives. The connecting process results, in each embodiment, in a hot plate having two heating surfaces and which is invertible to utilize the second heating surface when the first is worn to the point of replacement. Parallel stream transfer channels through the plates in the cross machine direction are formed in the fabrication process and each embodiment of the hot plate may utilize the same steam supply and condensate collecting manifolds (25) and underlying plate supporting system. Each of the plates may be made of relatively thin material making the hot plates thermally responsive to rapid heating and/or cooling.

A double backer (10) for curing the web bonding adhesive and drying the corrugated paperboard web (11) utilizes a web holddown apparatus for maintaining the web in intimate drying contact with the lower heating units (15) which does not require the use of a driven holddown belt. The holddown is provided instead by a series of parallel, flexible, closely spaced strips (17) suspended above the web in the heating section and extending in the direction of web travel. Supplemental holddown force may be provided by banks of spring fingers supported above and in contact with the holddown strips on a transverse support rod which may be rotated to vary the amount of supplemental holddown force. Alternately, the holddown strips may comprise continuous cables in which one run of the cables rests upon the moving web to provide the web holddown and a second run includes high friction cable portions which are movable into driving contact with the upper surface of the web to pull it through the heating section, as for initial web thread up. An embodiment is also disclosed in which the holddown strips are tied together laterally to form a more stable mat-like holddown system.

An apparatus and method for slitting a stack (15) of folded corrugated paperboard boxes utilizes a thin slitting blade (46) mounted for continuous movement through a slitting station and defining a vertical slitting plane. A stack supporting table (26) straddles the slitting blade (46) to support a stack (15) of boxes in a stand-by position above the blade (46). Adjustable upstream and downstream squaring devices (34, 35) are operative to square and center the stack (15) in the cutting plane and a vertically reciprocable ram (66) operates to move the stack (15) and the supporting table (26) downwardly past the blade (46) against a table biasing force to slit the stack (15) into two half-size stacks (47). The squaring devices (34, 35) are operable to re-square the slit half-size (47) prior to conveyance out of the slitting station. The slitting run of the continuous blade (46) operates in a rigid blade holder (66) which is adjustable to compensate for blade wear and to maintain the cutting edge of the blade (46) in a fixed plane.
