摘要: A novel method of fabrication of periodic dielectric composites involving a flexible computer design stage, rapid growth of a second dielectric component. Laser stereolithography is used to form the polymer material layer by layer by photopolymerisation of a liquid. Certain materials constructed in this fashion exhibit a complete loss-free barrier to microwave propagation through the material for a desired band of frequencies and are commonly known as photonic band gap crystals. Such materials could provide a novel medium for all-angle wide- and narrow-band blocking filters, narrow-band transmission filters, reflective and loss-free substrates for planar antennas, and novel loss-free media for oscillator cavities and waveguides. In addition a novel crystal structure, particularly suited to the fabrication method mentioned above and consisting of concatenated polyhedrons, is revealed.

摘要: An infrared optical system (100) incorporates a lens (118) imaging a remote scene onto a detector (112) within a cold shield (114). Stray radiation incident on the detector (112) is reduced by an optical stop in the form of a light emitting diode (LED) (126) producing negative luminescence. The LED (126) emits less radiation than background, and contributes less to the detector photon noise than an optical stop not exhibiting negative luminescence.

摘要: A laminated composite material (10) having patterned conductors integral to its structure is described which comprises a plurality of cloth layers and a penetrating resin matrix material in which at least one of the cloth layers (4) has a deposited patterned layer of electrical conductor to form a conducting path (14) in the resultant composite material. The electrical conductor is preferably deposited to such a thickness that individual fibres of the cloth are coated but that the resin permeates between individual fibres in the conducting regions. The conducting regions provide for external electrical connection of embedded electronic devices (2).

摘要: A method is provided for determining the identity of at least two discrete single nucleotide bases each adjacent to a predetermined nucleotide base sequence in a target sample comprising one or more types of polynucleotide chain, the method comprising incorporating a capture group into the target sample and immobilising the target sample by means of the capture group; mixing the target sample with (i) nucleotide primers which are complementary to the characterised base sequences such that they anneal thereto at positions adjacent to the bases to be identified and (ii) at least two types of dideoxynucleoside triphosphate (ddNTP), each type labelled with a distinguishable fluorescent group, and (iii) a nucleotide chain extending enzyme such that ddNTPs complementary to the bases to be identified are incorporated into the nucleotide primers; eluting the extending nucleotide primers, separating the types of extended nucleotide primer on basis of size or charge and identifying the ddNTPs incorporated into each type of nucleotide primer by reference to the fluorescent characteristics associated with the distinguishable groups. Primers and a test kit are provided for use in performance of the method.

摘要: A head up display system for an aircraft including means for generating a display indicating the attitude of the aircraft, the display including a reference frame (2) which takes the form of a vertically-aligned cylindrical grid consisting of lines (3) in an axial direction which are representative of azimuth and circumferential lines (4) which are representative of altitude and viewed from a position (1) on the cylinder axis in a direction corresponding to the aircraft vector. A zero height datum on the reference frame may be provided, this conveniently taking the form of a shaded area (5) appearing to close in one end of the cylinder, whilst the other end (10) of the cylinder, representing the vertically upward direction, is apparently open. The display may also include circumferential markings (6, 7) on the cylinder indicative of a demand height determined by the aircraft's control settings, and of the height of the aircraft. The display may also possess a central area (11) within which the said reference frame does not extend hence enabling the central area to be available for additional symbology or an unobstructed forward view.

摘要: An ultrawideband transverse electromagnetic mode horn antenna for use at high voltages, comprises a pulse generator (1) and two transmission horns (12, 18) containing different dielectric media. The interface (30) between the dielectric media is configured so that a signal from the generator is incident on the interface at an angle substantially equal to the Brewster angle, thereby maintaining a good impedance match across the interface. A further advantage of the arrangement is that the TEM wavefront is preserved through the antenna section allowing operation at fast pulse risetime (less than 200ps) for short duration (several ns) at high voltage.

摘要: An ultra-violet lamp (19) has a pair of electrodes (31, 32) within the lamp, the electrodes being connected to a DC power supply (34). There is a coil (37) wound round the lamp, the coil being connected to an RF power supply (38). The DC power supply (34) and the RF power supply (38) are controlled by control means (39) adapted to activate an RF voltage in the coil (37) to initiate the supply of ultra-violet light (20) from the lamp, to activate a DC voltage between the electrodes (31, 32), and to switch off the RF voltage when the DC voltage is sufficient to maintain the supply of ultra-violet light.

摘要: An electro-optic colour device comprises a layer of light modulating material, for example a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer (7), located between polarisers (8, 9, 10) at least one of which is coloured (9, 10). By activating the device, a voltage is applied across the polymer dispersed liquid crystal cell (PDLC) and the cell is switched from a scattering to a non-scattering state or vice-versa, and by arranging the coloured polariser(s) accordingly, the colour of the light transmitted can be controlled. Suitable applications include membrane switches.
