A gearbox for a motor vehicle comprises at least one input shaft (1) carrying a plurality of drive gearwheels (3, 4, 5) and three layshafts (6, 11, 15). A first gearwheel (3) on said input shaft meshes with a second gearwheel (7) on a first one (6) of said layshafts, which is adapted to establish a first gear transmission ratio between the input shaft and said first layshaft by being locked to said first layshaft. The second gearwheel (7; 107; 207; 307; 407) is rigidly coupled to a third gearwheel (8) on said first layshaft. Each of these drive gearwheels (11, 20, 28; 16, 22) meshes with at least one associated driven gearwheel (12, 21, 25, 29; 23, 27, 17) on one of two layshafts (4, 5), and each driven gearwheel (12, 21, 25, 29; 23, 27, 17) and its associated drive gearwheel (11, 20; 16, 22) form a gear set (11, 12; 16, 17; 20, 21; 22, 23; 20, 25; 22, 27; 28, 29) associated to a specific gear.
