The invention relates to a method and a device for feeding, providing, handling and/or exchanging rolls (12, 20) having flat and/or film material which is wound onto said rolls and serves as packaging material (22) for the packaging of piece goods, multipacks or similar assemblies of articles. In the device and method, at least approximately completely unwound and/or used up rolls (20) are removed from at least one installation position (EB1, EB2) of a packaging machine (14), whereupon in each case a new roll (12) having flat and/or film material is installed in the installation position (EB1, EB2) in question, wherein new rolls (12) of the packaging machine (14) are provided in a defined feeding and are installed there by means of at least one gripping and/or handling device (16) in the installation position (EB1, EB2) in question, after a used up roll (20) has previously been removed therefrom. At least the positions of the rolls (12) in the region of the defined feeding and/or provision and/or the gripping and/or handling device (16) and/or the movement space (46) thereof are detected by means of space surveillance devices (42) and at least the the movements of the gripping and/or handling device (16) are controlled in the region of the defined feeding and/or provision for the rolls (12) as a function of the acquired spatial, movement and/or sensor data (40).

A flexible substrate position control device (100) in a processing device, which transports a band-shaped flexible substrate (1) in a horizontal direction and in a vertical orientation and carries out processing of the substrate by processing units installed in a transport path of the substrate, is provided with: a pair of clamping rollers (131,132) that clamp an upper edge of the substrate; a support mechanism (140) that rotatably supports the pair of clamping rollers while allowing these rollers to mutually contact and separate from each other; urging means (150) for applying pressing force to the pair of clamping rollers through the support mechanism; and adjusting means (160) for adjusting the pressing force applied by the urging means. The pair of clamping rollers has an inclination, in which the direction of pressing relative to the clamping surface of the substrate is towards the edge of the substrate in the width direction, and is supported such that the rotating direction at the clamping surface is the same direction as the transport direction of the substrate. This flexible substrate position control device is able to inhibit the occurrence of sagging and wrinkling of a band-shaped flexible substrate, and together with realizing high-quality processing, is able to deal with transporting a flexible substrate in an opposite direction.

Within the context of the method, first of all at least partially unwound and/or used reels are removed from at least one installation position of a packaging machine (3) in order to maintain packaging operation and, following this, in each case one new reel (5) with flat and/or film material is inserted into the respective installation position. After the respective insertion, an outer layer of the respective new reel (5) is pulled off in the vicinity or in the region of the free end thereof and is connected to a section of the material web which is guided in the packaging machine (3) in order to form an uninterrupted material web. Furthermore, during or after insertion of the new reel (5), the rotational direction thereof and/or the orientation which concurs with the rotational direction are/is determined and/or checked by means of a detection device, and an orientation correction of the respective new reel (5) is performed or a further reel (5) with a suitable rotational direction and/or orientation which concurs with the rotational direction is selected for insertion and is inserted into the respective installation position if an incorrect rotational direction and/or an incorrect orientation which concurs with the rotational direction have/has been determined by means of the detection device.
