A method for making a pleated structure having a pleated shape memory is provided which includes the steps of: providing a material in a pleated structure having a plurality of substantially parallel folds; folding the material along a plurality of axes substantially perpendicular to the first plurality of folds so as to provide a folded structure defining wall portions between folds along the plurality of axes and having face portions at the folds; heating the material in the pleated structure so as to provide a heated material; and cooling the heated material so as to provide the material with shape memory toward the pleated structure. The material is preferably a filter media and the pleated structure is preferably a filter pack structure.

A filter unit comprises a plastics frame (10) into which a sheet of filter medium (19) is insert moulded. Portions of the frame form apertures (14) and other portions allow fluid access to and from the opposed surfaces of the filter medium (19) when the frame is covered by a flat surface. The frames also form portions of an integral capsule enclosing the medium. A number of such filter units (24) can be stacked together in various configurations so that the apertures (14) form inlets and outlets for fluid so that, in some configurations, fluid can be passed through the filter units in parallel while, in other configurations, fluid can be passed through filter units in succession. Filters of any convenient size can be produced by increasing the number of filter units (24) in a stack. The filters are bi-directional. The frames (10) can be of polypropylene connected to hydrophilic microporous nylon membrane by injection moulding, which has been found to give a filter unit that can be integrity tested.

The filter body (1, 2) of the filter element has a plurality of first holes (3) which are sealed by glue (52) at their bottom ends and a plurality of second holes (31) which are open at their bottom ends. A sheet of thermoplastic adhesive (7) is placed on the top end of the filter body (1, 2) and melted so that the top ends of the second holes (31) are sealed closed. The thermoplastic adhesive is melted so as to expose the open ends of the first holes (3) (see Fig. 8). In this way, there is provided the conventional type of filter body (1, 2) in which fluid entering via the first holes (3) exits via the second holes (31) and is filtered as it passes from the first to the second holes (see Fig. 9).

A process for manufacturing fine-structured bodies (15a-15e) with several closely spaced channel-like perforations of highly uniform shape, dimensions and surface quality. Several grooves (3) of constant cross-section and given cross-sectional contour over their entire length are cut in the surface of incisable, preferably metallic sheets (1), and grooved or grooved and ungrooved sheets are superimposed and joined together. The process permits the manufacture of fine-structured bodies of this type using simple means to produce a plurality of closely spaced channel-like perforations of constant cross-section and given cross-sectional contour over their entire length in these bodies. The perforations may be of any cross-sectional shape and arrangement, within very wide limits, the dimensional precision of the cross-sections is of the order of a thousandth of a millimetre, and the smallest wall thicknesses between adjacent perforations are of the order of a hundredth of a millimetre for perforations of length greater than 1000 mum. The grooves are cut by diamond tools, so that the dimensional precision of their cross-section is approx. U 1 mum for smallest wall thicknesses of approx. 15 mum and groove lengths of over 1000 mum.

Specifically, one or more filtering materials (1,2) including a plurality of tubes (3) each having a substantially circular shape cross-section and connecting portions (12,22) interconnecting the adjacent tubes (3) are rolled into a spiral shape to provide the tubular assembly with the axes of the tubes arranged side by side parallel to one another.
