The present invention discloses isolated polynucleotides encoding WUSCHEL-related homeobox4 proteins from two species of jute plants, namely, the Corchorus olitorius (“C. olitorius”) and Corchorus capsularis (“C. capsularis”), and corresponding polypeptides derived therefrom. The disclosed polynucleotide sequences encode WUSCHEL-related homeobox4 polypeptides (WOX4), which possess catalytic activities in enhancing fiber production in jute. The present invention also relates to the plants having a modulated expression of a nucleic acid encoding a WOX4 polypeptide, which have enhanced fiber yield relative to corresponding wild type plants or other control plants. Vectors, expression constructs and host cells comprising and/or consisting of the nucleotide sequences of the protein are also provided. Also disclosed are methods for producing the proteins and methods for modifying the proteins in order to improve their desirable characteristics. The proteins of the invention can be used in a variety of ways, including inducing, initiating, improving, or enhancing plant growth, plant height, fiber and seed yield.

Methods and compositions are described for producing a glucanase in transgenic plants and then incorporating parts of the transgenic plants in animal feed. The feed glucanase enzyme displays activity across a broad pH range, and tolerance to temperatures that are often encountered during the process of preparing animal feeds. Producing the enzyme in the transgenic plant enhances the thermal stability of the enzyme.

The invention is directed in part to plants modified to impede the transport of Cadmium (Cd) from the root system to aerial portions of the plants by reducing the expression and/or activity levels of HMA-related transporters. Reduced expression of NtHMA transporters in the plants results in substantially reduced content of Cadmium (Cd) in the leaf lamina. Various consumable products that are substantially free or substantially reduced in Cd content can be produced by incorporating leaves derived from tobacco plants modified to reduce the expression and/or activity of NtHMA transporters. Methods for producing the modified plants are also disclosed.

The present invention concerns a method for increasing yield in plants by introducing and expressing in said plant a nucleic acid molecule encoding a CDKB-RKA polypeptide having reduced, and preferably lacking catalytic kinase activity. This alternative invention also concerns plants showing increased yield relative to control plants, and comprising a CDKB-RKA polypeptide. This alternative invention also provides constructs comprising a B-type CDK polypeptide having reduced, and preferably lacking catalytic kinase activity, that are useful in performing the methods of the invention.
