An apparatus and method is disclosed for bonding a fiber reinforced plastic automotive body member (44) to a reinforcement member (46). An adhesive (56) is located between mating surfaces of the body member and the reinforcement member. Pressurized heated and cool air is used to heat and facilitate the cooling of the adhesive. The apparatus includes a switchable heating and cooling system that first provides pressurized heated air about outer surfaces of the body member and the reinforcement member, and thereafter, the system provides pressurized cool air about the same outer surfaces.

A tube-forming machine and process has a supply for delivering an elongate, folded, plastic web (10) along a path of travel. The web may be clear polyethylene folded treated surface to treated surface. A cutting mechanism (14) is positioned along the path including a hard cylindrical roll (18) and a cutter (24) having a cutting head and means to bias the head toward the roll. A rotatable sealing drum (15) has a cylindrical web engaging surface delineating a further portion of the path. A set of circumferentially spaced flame-emitting nozzles (55) are positioned adjacent the drum surface section. Each of the nozzles includes a tip disposed within the cylinder delineated by said drum surface and has an axis disposed in an imaginary radial plane. Each tip is directed radially upwardly to impinge its flame against portions of a web being fed along the path when such portions project from said drum surface. Each tip axis is at an angle from 90° to 60° with an imaginary line located by the intersection of such imaginary plane with said drum surface section with the 60° orientation of the tip axis being canted toward the drum. Preferably each tip axis is canted toward the drum at an angle of from 65° to 68° with said imaginary line.

During at least a portion of the continuous manufacture, a thermoplastic web is utilized which has different characteristics from the webs utilized in the remaining portion of the process or the steps of laying down a corrugated web and fusing the demes are repeated without retracting and raising the lowermost set of formers so that a honeycomb material having areas or volumes possessing different physical properties than the remainder of the honeycomb is produced.

A method of welding at least two layers (18, 20) of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or polyporopylene, and a weld (30) so produced comprises directing a jet of hot gas from a nozzle (10), through a hole (16) in an inlet mask (16), and against the layers (18, 20). The layers (18, 20) are backed by an outlet mask (22) having a hole (26) and serving as a heat sink. The inlet mask (16), the layers (18, 20), and the outlet mask (22) are clamped together. A transverse weld (30) is formed entirely of the material of the layers (18, 20). The weld (30) has a columnar shape with an enlarged end (32′), which is cold-headed. The opposite end of the weld is level with or depressed with respect to marginal surfaces of the adjacent layer (18, 20). If the material is crystallizable, the weld may be more crystalline than other portions of the layers.

An automatic seam welder (10) for thermoplastic material includes a single piece frame (12) riding on two drive wheels (18, 22) and a caster (20), the drive wheels (18, 22) being driven by a drive motor (52) through a helical spring clutch (56). A heat gun (14) is gimbal mounted to the frame (12) and includes a blower, heating element (36), and shaped foot (38) to direct hot air between overlapped thermoplastic sheets. A thermocouple (40) in the foot (38) directly senses the air temperature and, through a control circuit in a control instrument enclosure (16), is used to control power to the heater element (36). A guide wheel, foot rest (44) and air dam (74) are also provided.

The joining apparatus includes apparatus for enabling the heating of a melt region in the proximity of the interface of the first and second piping system component connection ends at least to the material softening point of the thermo-plastic material of the melt region, and further includes vacuummetric apparatus for vacuummetrically inducing outward translation of the melted material of the melt region. The method includes the steps of (a) heating a melt region in the proximity of the interface of the first and second piping system component connection ends at least to the material softening point of the thermo-plastic material of the melt region, and (b) vacuummetrically inducing outward translation of the melted material of the melt region.
