A combustion method and apparatus in which combustible matter, e.g., waste matter, coal, etc., is gasified to produce a combustible gas containing a sufficiently large amount of combustible component to melt the ash by its own heat. A fluidized-bed furnace (2) has an approximately circular horizontal cross-sectional configuration. A moving bed (9), in which a fluidized medium settles and diffuses, is formed in the central portion of the furnace, and a fluidized bed (10), in which the fluidized medium is actively fluidized, is formed in the peripheral portion in the furnace. The fluidized medium is turned over to the upper part of the moving bed (9) from the upper part of the fluidized bed (10), thus circulating through the two beds. Combustible matter (11) is cast into the upper part of the moving bed (9) and gasified to form a combustible gas while circulating, together with the fluidized medium. The amount of oxygen supplied to the fluidized-bed furnace (2) is set so as to be the same contained in an amount of air not higher than 30% of the theoretical amount of combustion air. The temperature of the fluidized bed (10) is maintained at 450°C to 650°C so that the combustible gas produced contains a large amount of combustible component. The combustible gas and fine particles produced in the fluidized-bed furnace (2) are supplied to a melt combustion furnace where they are burned at high temperature, and the resulting ash is melted.

The raw syngas generated in a partial oxidation gasifier (2) also includes carbon soot which is removed and recovered from the syngas by scrubbing with water. The scrubbing water (4) contains one or more high temperature surfactants (6) which allow greater soot concentrations in the water-scrubbing quench zone of the gasifier (2). The carbon soot is separated from the scrubbing water (10) with the aid of a scrubbing oil. The separation of the carbon soot from the scrubbing water (10) is enhanced with the aid of one or more surfactants (6) that render the soot particles hydrophobic and oleophilic. The recovered carbon soot is ultimately recycled to the gasifier (2) to recover the energy value of the carbon during the partial oxidation reaction. The overall energy efficiency of the gasification process can be increased by removing all or a significant portion of the water from the soot mixture before recycling the soot. Separating the soot from the water allows for independent regulation of the soot and water recycle streams, depending on the reaction conditions in the gasifier (2).

The invention relates to a process for the gasification of a carbonaceous fuel in a fluidized bed gasifier (1). In the process, a fuel (5), such as coal or peat, and a primary gasification gas (6, 7), such as air, are fed into the gasifier, and a product gas (10) is removed from the gasifier, the product gas being purified by separating fine-grained solid ingredients (16) therefrom. The solids fraction (16) which is separated from the product gas (16) and which contains unreacted carbon is fed together with a stoichiometric excess of air (27) into another fluidized bed reactor (20), which serves as an oxidizer, and the oxygen-containing gas (34) exiting from the oxidizer is directed to the fluidized bed gasifier (1) as a secondary gasification gas. By the increased oxidation, the carbon conversion in the process is increased and a residual ash with a low carbon content is produced.

The present invention concerns a process and an apparatus for thermal conversion of biomass and organic wastes. According to the invention the feedstock is fed into a fluidized-bed reactor (1-3), wherein the feed is converted at an elevated temperature under the influence of particulate matter kept in a fluidized state by a fluidizing gas, the particulate matter is transferred from the reactor to a regenerator (24, 28, 29) for regeneration and then recirculated to the reactor after the regeneration, and the converted hydrocarbon products are recovered from the reactor. Both the reactor (1-3) and the regenerator comprise risers (13, 24) having an axially annular cross section and being equipped with multi-inlet cyclones (14, 17, 25, 26) for the separation of particulate matter. By means of the invention it is possible to produce pyrolysis oil, the quality of which is higher than that of oil produced with the processes of the prior art. The incorporation of multi-inlet cyclones into the reactor configuration reduces gas velocities, reduces the physical size of the cyclone and shortens the residence time of gases in the cyclone.

The invention relates to a method for processing bottom ash of incinerator plants, notably of thermal power plants and industrial furnaces, such as blast furnaces, converters, glass tanks or refuse incinerators. According to said method the bottom ashes are transmitted to a fluid-bed gasifier (1), possibly together with fly ash. The fluid-bed gasifier (1) is subjected to hot air, oxygen and/or countercurrent steam and used as crushing chamber (6). The gases withdrawn from the crushing chamber (6) or the fluid-bed gasifier (1) are guided over heat exchangers (9, 11), filtered and at least partly condensed. In the heat exchangers (9, 11) feed water for producing the steam of the countercurrent crusher is heated and supplied to an evaporator (14) and a superheater. The gases of the fluid-bed gasifier (1) which remain after partial condensation are burned to evaporate the feed water.
