A routing node (516) for translating and re-directing Signaling System 7 (SS7) messages associated with ported subscribers in a communications network. Re-direction or re-routing of signaling message packets is accomplished without the need for explicit local number portability (LNP) type triggers or queries, and such as the routing node of the present invention is considered to implement a triggerless LNP (TLNP) routing solution. Upon entering the routing node, SS7 ISDN User Part (ISUP) type signaling messages (N1) that require LNP translation service are encapsulated in an SS7 Signaling Connection Control Part (SCCP) message packet and internally routed within the switch to an LNP translation subsystem (518). The LNP translation subsystem (518) can be integrated within the routing node (516) or a portion of the LNP translation subsystem (518) can be located on an external database server platform. LNP translation involves the lookup of a called party (122) address in an LNP database, and the return of a Location Routing Number (LRN). The returned LNR, which is representative of the End Office (EO, 110 & 113) currently servicing the called party (113), is inserted into the original ISUP message (N1) and the resulting modified message (N2) is then routed from the switch.

A method for controlling customers' access to services on a broadband network. The method uses a circuit identifier, unique to each customer, to compare service requests with service entitlements. The network provider flows the circuit identifiers to the service providers (20a-20f) where relationship between the circuit identifiers and the service entitlements is established in service orders. Service providers (20a-20f) flow the service orders back to the broadband network though a standard business system interface. The relationship between the circuit identifiers and the service requests is accomplished at the Broadband Digital Terminal (10) that interface the customers to the broadband network. The circuit identifiers also permit sorting of databases containing logs of service requests and logs of maintenance actions.

Digital circuit multiplication equipment (DCME) refers to coding bit rate information included in a pseudo-speech signal. In accordance with the coding bit rate information, the DCME selects either a coded speech signal extracted by a transmission bit rate restorer (19) or a coded speech signal including bit rate identification information added by a coding bit rate information adding section (30), and supplies the selected coded speech signal to a bearer line. The DCME can solve a problem of a conventional DCME in that a mismatch can take place between the actual transmission bit rate of the coded speech signal and the transmission bit rate assigned to the bearer line when providing the variable bit rate DCME with a tandem passthrough function, and therefore the correct coding bit rate information cannot be transferred to a speech decoder, bringing about serious degradation in the speech quality.

Das Nachrichtenübertragungsnetz ist in mindestens zwei Multiplexschichten nach einer Hierarchie logisch strukuriert gemäß einem in dem Nachrichtenübertragungsnetz verwendeten Protokoll und jedes Netzelement hat auf zumindest einen Teil der Multiplexschichten Zugriff. Mittels eines von dem sendenden Netzelement an alle übrigen Netzelemente verschickten Rundrufs werden mögliche Pfade mit freier Übertragungskapazität zwischen dem sendenden und dem ausgewählten Netzelement identifiziert. Dazu wird zunächst geprüft, welche der Multiplexschichten für den Aufbau der Verbindung geeignet sind. Dann wird der Rundruf über bestehende Verbindungen der geeigneten Multiplexschichten weitergeleitet, auf die das jeweils weiterleitende Netzelement Zugriff hat. Anschließend wird die Verbindung über einen der identifizierten Pfade eingerichtet.

An apparatus for automatically selecting one of a standard decision directed (dd) mode and a soft dd mode in a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for receiving a data signal includes an equalizer (30) utilizing forward error correction (FEC) for providing first and second output signals corresponding to a DFE automatic switching mode and a soft automatic switching mode, respectively, and a comparator (36) for comparing byte error rates (ByER) of the first and second output signals for selecting as a superior mode that mode associated with a lower ByER and outputting the output signal with the lower ByER. A lock detector (30) provides a lock signal derived from the DFE output signal with the lower ByER and a mode switch (38) selectively places the DFE outputs in one of the dd modes or a blind mode, depending on the lock signal.

The network hubs use numbers of connection processors (52 and 54) to interact with the messaging systems. A message router (72), connection manager (74), data replicator (76), and an administrative event manager (78) are used to control the operations of the hub in processing a message.
