A DHCP server (12) can add new hardware address registrations to the LDAP using an "unregistered" service class. The DHCP server sends a DHCP reply tailored for unregistered devices, such as by allocating a privately-allocated IP address with no Internet access, or an IP address for a self-provisioning web server. A DHCP server views IP address allocation as having a short duration. Thus, if the IP network configuration does not change, user terminal will continue to receive the same allocated IP address due to the DHCP server's perception of an indefinite lease. The consistency of the IP addresses simplifies many operational concerns about dynamic addresses, such as minimizing DNS (domain name service) hostname updates, mapping IP addresses to user terminals during security incidents, etc.

The subscriber mobile registration status is retrieved upon receiving the call incoming to the subscriber's designated single telephone number. The call is routed to a wireline destination stored in the WLR (24) in response to the subscriber mobile registration status indicating that the subscriber is wireline registered. A subscriber location request is sent from the WLR (24) to the Home Location Register (HLR) of the wireless network (30) in response to the subscriber mobile registration status indicating that the subscriber is wireless registered. A routing request is sent from the HLR (34) to the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) where the subscriber is registered in response to receiving the subscriber current location request. A wireless routing destination number (TLDN) is communicated from the MSC (32) to the WLR (24). The call incoming to the subscriber's directory number is routed by the WLR (24) to the wireless TLDN.

An apparatus and method of powering a cable telephony service platform (CTSP) in a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network are provided which utilizes a combination of power from a local AC driven power source having a back-up battery for powering the CTSP within a network interface unit (NIU) during interruptions in normal AC power, and a network generated charging current which maintains the battery at full float voltage charge irrespective of the duration of any such interruptions in AC power delivery. Thus, the present invention minimizes power required to be delivered by the network while still ensuring support of reliable lifeline telephony service for cable telephony on an HFC network.

A method and system is provided for selectively directing calls to wireless units (16) in an integrated wireline and wireless communication system (10) as part of a wireless extension service. When a call is forwarded by a wireline switch, the receiving wireless access manager (18) determines whether the intended wireless subscriber unit is being serviced by a different access manager. If so, the call is automatically transferred using a high speed ATM inter-access manager communication line (20). Efficiency is therefore increased because the originating wireline switch does not need to set up an interoffice trunk line to accomplish the necessary call routing.
