Multi-layered compositions having a plurality of pillared metal complexes disposed on a supporting substrate (2), the pillars comprising divalent electron acceptor moieties (12) with a phosphonate or arsenate (14) at each end. Each layer of parallel pillars is separated by a layer of a group (IVA), (IVB), (IIIA) or (IIIB) metal or a lanthanide (18). The compositions can further comprise particles of at least one group VIII metal at zero valence entrapped within each layer of the complex (16). The complexes can also incorporate 'stalactites' and 'stalagmites' of capped arsonato or phosphonato ligands interspersed with the pillars providing a series of interstices about each electron accepting group. The supporting substrate can be comprised of an organic polymer template. The complexes are useful for the conversion and storage of solar energy, for the production of photocurrents, and as catalyst for reduction reactions, for example, the production of hydrogen peroxide from oxygen and hydrogen gases, the production of H2 gas from water, and the reduction of ketones to form alcohols.

The invention provides an article of manufacture, and methods of designing and making the article. The article permits or prohibits waves of energy, especially photonic/electromagnetic energy, to propagate through it, depending on the energy band gaps built into it. The structure of the article may be reduced to a pattern of points having a hyperuniform distribution. The point-pattern may exhibit a crystalline symmetry, a quasicrystalline symmetry or may be aperiodic. In some embodiments, the point pattern exhibits no long-range order. Preferably, the point-pattern is isotropic. In all embodiments, the article has a complete, TE- and TM-optimized band-gap. The extraordinary transmission phenomena found in the disordered hyperuniform photonic structures of the invention find use in optical micro-circuitry (all-optical, electronic or thermal switching of the transmission), near-field optical probing, thermophotovoltaics, and energy-efficient incandescent sources.

Thus, provided herein are fusion proteins of a polypeptide and a split intein N-fragment, or variant thereof, as described below in greater detail. Also provided are complexes of the fusion protein and a split intein C-fragment or variant thereof as described in detail below. The complex of the fusion protein and C-fragment or variant thereof can be via a covalent interaction between the fusion protein and C-fragment or variant or via a noncovalent interaction (e.g., ionic, H-bonding, and/or van der Waals interaction). A system and method for non-invasively tracking a particle in a sample is disclosed. The system includes a 2-photon or confocal laser scanning microscope (LSM) and a particle-holding device coupled to a stage with X-Y and Z position control. The system also includes a tracking module having a tracking excitation laser, X-Y and Z radiation-gathering components configured to detect deviations of the particle in an X-Y and Z directions. The system also includes a processor coupled to the X-Y and Z radiation gathering components, generate control signals configured to drive the stage X-Y and Z position controls to track the movement of the particle. The system may also include a synchronization module configured to generate LSM pixels stamped with stage position and a processing module configured to generate a 3D image showing the 3D trajectory of a particle using the LSM pixels stamped with stage position.

According to an exemplary embodiment of the invention, systems and methods are provided for producing low work function electrodes. According to an exemplary embodiment, a method is provided for reducing a work function of an electrode. The method includes applying, to at least a portion of the electrode, a solution comprising a Lewis basic oligomer or polymer; and based at least in part on applying the solution, forming an ultra-thin layer on a surface of the electrode, wherein the ultra-thin layer reduces the work function associated with the electrode by greater than 0.5 eV. According to another exemplary embodiment of the invention, a device is provided. The device includes a semiconductor; at least one electrode disposed adjacent to the semiconductor and configured to transport electrons in or out of the semiconductor.
