Methods and systems for processing a reaction product containing lignin-derived products, such as phenolics, can comprise hydrotreating the reaction product to convert the lignin-derived products to desired higher molecular weight compounds. The methods can further include separating the higher molecular weight compounds from unconverted products, such as unconverted phenolics, and recycling the unconverted phenolics for use as at least a portion of the digestion solvent and for further conversion to desired higher molecular weight compounds with additional hydrotreatment.

The present invention provides a method for easily and efficiently producing cellulose beads which has narrow pore size distribution and pore structure suitable for an adsorbent and of which adsorption performance is excellent without using highly toxic and highly corrosive auxiliary raw material and without industrially disadvantageous cumbersome step. The method for producing porous cellulose beads according to the present invention is characterized in comprising (a) the step of preparing a fine cellulose dispersion by mixing a low temperature alkaline aqueous solution and cellulose, (b) the step of preparing a mixed liquid by adding a water-soluble low molecular organic compound to the fine cellulose dispersion, (c) the step of preparing an emulsion by dispersing the mixed liquid in a dispersion medium, (d) the step of contacting the emulsion with a coagulating solvent.

The invention proposes a process for producing ethanol, comprising steps of pre-treatment of the lignocellulosic vegetable raw material, comprising the steps consisting in destructuring the lignocellulosic vegetable raw material, then in separating, on the one hand, the cellulose (C6)capable of then being hydrolysed (and fermented for the production of ethanol) and, on the other hand, the hemicelluloses capable of then being hydrolysed and the lignins, characterized in that the hydrolysis of the cellulose and of the hemicelluloses is then carried out in a sequenced manner according to the following steps consisting in: -i) beginning the enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose by means of at least one enzyme for a first period with a view to obtaining an intermediate hydrolysate; -ii) adding hemicelluloses to said intermediate hydrolysate; -iii) continuing the enzymatic hydrolysis of the mixture until a final hydrolysate is obtained at the end of a total period of enzymatic hydrolysis.

The process includes pretreating the biomass with a first basic solution such as sodium hydroxide and mechanically altering the fibers to provide a fluidized biomass. The fluidized biomass is then subjected to high frequency pulses and shear forces without denaturing the individual components of the biomass. The biomass is then subjected to compressive force to separate a first liquid fraction from a first fractionated biomass. The first fractionated biomass may again then be subjected to the same high frequency pulses and shear forces as previously, particularly if there are hemicellulose and/or sugars still present in the first fractionated biomass. Compressive forces are used to separate a second liquid fraction from a second fractionated biomass. The second fractionated biomass is subjected to oxidation such as with hydrogen peroxide at a pH of 8 to 12. The second fractioned biomass is then subjected to compressive forces to separate one or more water insoluble components of the biomass in water soluble form.

A method of manufacturing a cellulose-based shaped article. The method comprises subjecting a solution of lignocellulosic material, dissolved in a distillable ionic liquid, to a spinning method,wherein the ionic liquid is a diazabicyclononene (DBN)-based ionic liquid. DBN-based ionic liquids have good dissolution power, high thermal and chemical stability, lack runaway reactions and exhibit low energy consumption, due to low spinning temperatures. The shaped cellulose articles can be used as textile fibres, high-end non- woven fibres, technical fibres, films for packaging, and barriers films in batteries, as membranes and as carbon-fibre precursors.
