摘要: An object of the present invention is to provide a method of producing a saccharified solution, in which saccharified slurry is obtained by hydrothermally treating cellulosic biomass slurry in a supercritical state or a subcritical state by a continuous reactor. The method, while keeping uniform mixing of the slurry with respect to a cross section perpendicular to a mixing axis and keeping a plug flow in the axial direction, reduces the risk of a pressure reducing valve becoming clogged when the high-temperature and high-pressure slurry is flash-evaporated after being hydrothermally treated. Another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for producing a saccharified solution and a continuous reactor, the apparatus and the continuous reactor being suitable for executing the saccharified solution producing method. In the present invention, at the time of hydrothermally treating the cellulosic biomass slurry by the continuous reactor continuously, the slurry is intensely stirred in a front part of the continuous reactor, and stirred in a rear part of the continuous reactor by a stirring device with low propelling force, such that the plug flow in the axial direction is kept while the slurry is being uniformly mixed with respect to the cross section perpendicular to the mixing axis. Preferably, after the saccharified slurry is diluted by using a saccharified solution, solid matter in the slurry is crushed by a crushing apparatus and the slurry is flash-evaporated.

摘要: It is disclosed a process for producing a bio-product from a ligno-cellulosic biomass, wherein the ligno-cellulosic biomass, a gas and steam are introduced in a pressurized reactor operated in a continuous manner at conditions to have a vapor head space. In the pressurized reactor, the vapor head space is maintained at a vapor head space temperature and at a pressure which is at least 1 bar greater than a pure steam equilibrium pressure at the vapor head space temperature. The ligno-cellulosic biomass is then refined by rapidly releasing the pressure while discharging the ligno-cellulosic biomass from the pressurized reactor assembly to create a pre-treated ligno-cellulosic biomass, which is then hydrolyzed and converted to the bio-product. Preferably, at least a portion of the gas is air entrapped in the ligno-cellulosic biomass and it is introduced into the pressurized reactor as part of the ligno-cellulosic biomass. In a preferred embodiment, the lignocellulosic biomass is subjected to a soaking step and an aeration step prior to being introduced into the pressurized reactor, without any xylans separation step.

摘要: A system and method to treat biomass to make bioproducts such as biofuels and biochemical is disclosed. The systems are configured to treat a liquid component separated from biomass to yield sugars available to form a fermentation product or bio-product. The system and method comprises treatment and separation of process streams (e.g. liquids, solids, etc.) to produce bioproducts such as fuel and biochemical as well as to recover/reuse and utilize content of process streams. Lignin is separated from the bioproduct stream (e.g. a solids component) forming a recovered bioproducts; efficient removal of lignin facilitates productive operation of the system. The system disclosed is configured to recover and recycle acid (e.g. phosphoric acid) used as a concentrated acid in the process to pre-treat biomass (for bioprocessing). The acid used in the process is recycled and recovered in order to establish economically attractive biorefinery to make bio-products from biomass (e.g. to reduce the cost of operation such as from supply of fresh acid). Concentrated acid used to pre-treat biomass may comprise about 90 to over 98 percent recovered acid (and 10 to less than 2 percent fresh acid). The recovery and recycle process for the acid (e.g. acid used to pre-treat biomass) may comprise one or more of the inventive concepts and features shown and described in the FIGURES and specification.

摘要: Processes disclosed are capable of converting biomass into high-crystallinity nanocellulose with surprisingly low mechanical energy input. In some variations, the process includes fractionating biomass with an acid (such as sulfur dioxide), a solvent (such as ethanol), and water, to generate cellulose-rich solids and a liquid containing hemicellulose and lignin; and mechanically treating the cellulose-rich solids to form nanofibrils and/or nanocrystals. The total mechanical energy may be less than 500 kilowatt-hours per ton. The crystallinity of the nanocellulose material may be 80% or higher, translating into good reinforcing properties for composites. The nanocellulose material may include nanofibrillated cellulose, nanocrystalline cellulose, or both. In some embodiments, the nanocellulose material is hydrophobic via deposition of some lignin onto the cellulose surface. Optionally, sugars derived from amorphous cellulose and hemicellulose may be separately fermented, such as to monomers for various polymers. These polymers may be combined with the nanocellulose to form completely renewable composites.
