The present invention relates to anionic compounds and their application in detergent compositions. The compounds have the dual benefits of surfactancy and of suds suppression.
(a) a compound of the formula: wherein X is a member selected from the group consisting of N, O and S; R 1 and R 2 are independently a straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated non-aromatic hydrocarbon of four to eighteen carbon atoms; m is 1 or 2; and n is 0, 1 or 2; and (b) a second compound which is a liquid at room temperature and selected from the group consisting of n-butylamine, butyl monoethanolamine, ethylamino ethanol, diethylamine, diethylamino ethanol, ethyldiethanol amine, triethylamine, n-butyl diethanolamine, N-methyl morpholine, N-ethyl morpholine, triethylenediamine, and dimethylamino propylamine.
The reaction product of the present invention has excellent surfactant properties, and is suitable for use in coloring compositions to improve the fugitivity from skin and clothing. The reaction product is also useful as a cleansing agent.

A method and compounds useful for this method are described for enzyme-amplified signal detection in analytical assays requiring extremely high detection sensitivity which uses a substrate capable of being transformed by an enzyme from a compound which does not form a luminescent lanthanide chelate into a product which forms a luminescent lanthanide chelate. The method in which a substrate not capable of forming a highly luminescent lanthanide chelate is enzymatically altered to produce a product which forms a highly luminescent lanthanide chelate and hence is particularly useful in time-resolved luminescence analysis as required in many different heterogeneous or homogeneous assay formats is described herein. Above mentioned compounds include benzoic acid, 2-phosphonooxy-derivatives (α), benzophenone, 4-phosphonooxy-derivates (β), as well as (γ) and (δ).

A method is provided for sulfonating an acyloxy substituted benzene ring to obtain high yields of desired sulfonated compounds that are useful as cleaning, bleaching, or fabric treating additives. A particularly preferred additive so prepared has the structure

The benzene ring is sulfonated by contacting with a molar excess of sulfur trioxide source and then irreversibly reacting the sulfur trioxide excess with a quenching agent. A neutralization process for preparing peracid precursors in high yield by neutralizing sulfonated aryl esters is also provided.
