A process is disclosed for producing hard elastic antifriction coating layers that adhere firmly to elastomer substrates. The substrates are coated with a sol obtained by hydrolysing and condensing silanes having the formula (I): R1Si(OR')¿3?, in which R?1¿ is a glycidyloxy or mercapto-functional rest and R' is a lower alkyl rest, then hardening the coating layer into a gel. This process is particularly suitable for coating rubber surfaces, for example of windshield wiper blades.

The invention relates to an apparatus (1) for testing tyre compounds, which comprises a road drum (3) and a specimen (5), rotating about respective parallel axes (X, Y) and being in rolling contact with each other. The specimen (5) of rubber to be analysed is mounted at the end of a spindle operated by a motor (6): advantageously the spindle is housed inside a closed casing (63) so as not to be exposed to water or other agents during the tests. This results in an apparatus wherein the spindle driving the specimen may be supported by non-sealed and hence low-friction bearings, thereby not altering the results of the tests carried out.

A method and apparatus for continuously or repeatedly monitoring road surface friction utilizes a separate test wheel (101) attached to a vehicle and in contact with a road surface and a device for detecting slippage of the test wheel (101) resulting from applying either a braking or accelerating torque on the test wheel (101). A signal corresponding to the applied braking or accelerating torque at the moment slip is detected and used to provide an indication to the driver of the slip condition. The method and apparatus is useful in vehicles as well as aircraft or in other applications where it is desired to monitor road friction.

A process is disclosed for determining the lubricant power of lubricant oils for slip-controlled clutches. In a test container (14) designed as a double-walled, temperable vessel filled with test lubricant oil, two friction partners (6, 8) are rotated against each other under a test load in practical conditions. A coefficient of friction characteristic curve (27, 28) is determined depending on the sliding speed. If in a working range (26) a progressive characteristic curve is obtained, the lubricant oil is suitable for use in slip-controlled clutches. The device required to carry out the process has a relatively simple structure and requires only a small amount of test lubricant oil, and so the process and device can be used to test production charges, in lubricant oil development, during bench or field tests and to test ageing processes in a laboratory.

The device includes a water-swellable hydrogel body (6), which swells in proportion to the water content of the medium, in the form of a column. The position of the top periphery (14) of the column in conjunction with the scale (2) directly or indirectly indicates the water content of the medium. The hydrogel is preferably a linear random block copolymer comprising segments of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(propylene oxide) connected by polyurethaneurea segments, having a swellability in water of 1 to 5 times its dry state.
