The invention relates to a light multilayer sound absorbing component, in particular for motor vehicles. The aim of said invention is to create a sound-absorbing component for motor vehicles, which has a relatively low weight and good or improved, in comparison with current components, acoustic properties. For this purposes, the inventive component in embodied such that it is multilayer and comprises a covering air-permeable layer (17) and at least one air-permeable non-woven layer (10'') which is made of thermoplastic fibres and coupled with the covering layer (17) in a sound-conducting manner. Said component is characterised in that the non-woven layer (10'') has a thickness ranging from 2 to 7 mm for a grammage of 500-1500 g/m and is not or only partially connected to the covering layer (17) on at least 20 % of the surface thereof oriented towards said covering layer (17).

Carpet backing is prepared from carpet scrap by first comminuting the carpet scrap into fragments and then melting and fusing the carpet scrap fragments together to render molten fragments. The resulting molten fragments containing synthetic resins are then formed into agglomerates. The pellets are then ground into a fine powder. A slurry may be prepared from the ground powder and a carrier. The ground powder may, alternatively, be mixed with a polyurethane reactive mixture, aqueous polymer containing emulsion or a thermoplastic composition such as bitumen, polypropylene or polyethylene. The resulting polymeric coating is coated onto a substrate. The coated substrate is then hardened.
