Number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 40,000 to 150,000, grams per mole (g/mol); and C. Hydrogenation level such that each hydrogenated vinyl aromatic polymer block and each hydrogenated conjugated diene polymer block has a hydrogenation level of at least 95 percent.

Disclosed are: a plastic optical fiber comprising a core and a clad composed of at least one layer, wherein the clad comprises a copolymer comprising, as a copolymer components, 10 to 35% by weight of ethylene, 45 to 69% by weight of tetrafluoroethylene, 20 to 45% by weight of hexafluoropropylene, and 0.01 to 10% by weight of a specific fluorovinyl compound; and a plastic optical fiber code comprising the plastic optical fiber. The plastic optical fiber and the plastic optical fiber code have such a level of heat resistance that they can withstand the use at an actual use temperature of 105°C. The plastic optical fiber and the plastic optical fiber code have a good balance among wet heat resistance, bending loss, flexibility and other properties and also has excellent pistoning properties, and therefore are suitable for automotive interior wiring and house wiring.

The invention provides novel fluoropolymers capable of forming optical elements having low refractive indexes and excellent heat resistance; novel fluorine-containing diene compounds having two unsaturated bonds capable of giving the above fluoropolymers; and light transmitters and plastic optical fibers made by using the fluoropolymers, which exhibit high performance by virtue of the low refractive indexes and excellent heat resistance, specifically, fluorine-containing diene compounds represented by the general formula: CF2=CFCF(ORf)CF2OCF=CF2 [wherein Rf is perfluoroalkyl such as trifluoromethyl]; fluoropolymers of the diene compounds; light transmitters made by using the fluoropolymers; and plastic optical fibers wherein the core is made of a composition comprising a fluoropolymer described above and a low-molecular fluorine compound serving to enhance the refractive index.

A plastic optical fiber cable includes: a bare optical fiber including a core made of a poly(methyl methacrylate) or a copolymer including methyl methacrylate as a major component and a cladding layer including, at least in the outermost layer, a layer made of a certain fluorine-containing olefin-based resin; and a coating layer provided on the outer surface thereof. The coating layer includes a protective coating layer, a light blocking coating layer, and a functional coating layer, the layers being provided in the order mentioned from inner side. The protective coating layer is made of a certain resin material. The light blocking coating layer is made of a nylon-based resin including, as a major component, nylon 11 or nylon 12, the nylon-based resin containing monomer and oligomer compounds derived from the nylon-based resin in an amount of a certain range. The functional coating layer is made of a nylon-based resin composition having a crystalline melting point within a certain range, the nylon-based resin composition containing a certain amount of melamine cyanurate or bromine atoms and further containing a certain amount of inorganic chromatic pigments, or the layer is made of a nylon-based resin composition having a crystalline melting point of within a certain range and an oxygen transmission rate within a certain range.

The present invention relates to a plastic photonic crystal fiber for terahertz wave transmission and a method for manufacturing thereof. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a plastic photonic crystal fiber which can be easily maunfactured and has low loss characteristics to be used as a waveguide of teraherzt waves. The plastic photonic crystal fiber includes a crystal defect component having a longitudinal axis and a photonic crystal component surrounding the crystal defect component. The photonic crystal component has an array of a plurality of plastic elements having logitudinal axes and forming a 2 dimensional photonic crystal structure with a predetermined lattice constant. Further, the plastic photonic crystal fiber of the present invention can be used as a preform from which a plastic photonic crystal fiber for an optical communication (400-800 nm) can be drawn.
