a digital video signal decoder (171, 172, 174) including:
an input terminal coupled to receive the encoded digital video signal having the first video display format during the first time interval and the second video display format during the second time interval, the first video display format being different from the second video display format and both the first and second video display formats being different from the predetermined video display format; data retrieval circuitry (209) which extracts from the encoded digital video signal data identifying the first video display format during the first time interval and second video display format during the second time interval; and signal processing circuitry (212, 214, 216, 218, 230, 232, 282) which decodes the encoded digital video signal to produce a decoded video signal, the signal processing circuitry (212, 214, 216, 218, 230, 232, 282) including a frequency domain filter (216) having first and second cutoff frequencies during the first and second time intervals, respectively, and a down sampling processor (232) to process the filtered digital video signal according to a first down conversion process during the first time interval and to a second down conversion process during the second time interval;
a polyphase filter (282), responsive to a filter control signal, for selecting a coefficient set from among a plurality of coefficient sets, responsive to a downsampling ratio between the decoded video signal and the single predetermined video display format, the polyphase filter down-sampling the decoded video signal using respectively different coefficient sets during the first and second intervals, respectively, to produce data representing an image having the video display format; and a controller (1150), coupled to receive the identifying data which identifies the extracted first and second video display format, the controller (1150) producing control signals for the digital video signal decoder (171, 172, 174) and for the polyphase filter (282) during the first and second time intervals which cause the decoder and the polyphase filter (282) to convert the encoded digital video signal corresponding to the extracted first and second display formats into the output video signal having the single predetermined video display format during the first and second time intervals.

A method of color interpolation of pixels of an image detected by a digital color sensor comprises the steps of interpolating separately the pixels belonging to each of a plurality of subdivision channels of the pixels of the detected image respectively for primary red-green-blue colors (RGB) or for base hues for generating weighted values relating to either said primary colors or to said base hues for each pixel of the image to be output. This method generates images with enhanced details because it comprises the steps of defining wavelet coefficients of the wavelet sub-band LL depending on the values of the pixel of each channel; and estimating for each channel wavelet coefficients of the other wavelet sub-bands HL, LH and HH of the image to be output in function of said wavelet coefficients of the wavelet sub-band LL of the image to be output.

Disclosed are method and apparatus for the manipulation of thumbnail images as used in image-based browsing file management systems. Disclosed are arrangements whereby zooming in and out of thumbnail images can be performed without a continued need to decompress a true image thus providing for faster operation. Pixel interpolation and/or replication are used to generate intermediate images that are display to deliver to the user a perception of a transitory zoom yet are of sufficient detail to maintain user orientation. Aspect ratio zooming of thumbnail containment areas is also disclosed which facilitates ease of browsing. The compression of thumbnail type images using a discrete wavelet transform facilitates the fast zoom of thumbnails and their associated containment areas.

A compression video decoder and a method thereof, which decodes a standard compressed and encoded video stream, directly outputs the decoded image according to a screen size of a display device without using a special scale-down block for scaling down the image, increases a speed by reducing computational complexity for scaling down the image, maintains quality of the original image, and minimizes distortion. The compression video decoder for decoding the compressed and encoded video stream according to a video compression method using discrete cosine transform (DCT) and motion compensation (MC), includes an inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) block for extracting an N×N block DCT image in an image scale-down ratio according to DC coefficients from an 8×8 block DCT image which has been obtained from the compressed and encoded video stream and will be IDCT-processed, multiplying the respective coefficients by N/8, and performing the IDCT thereon, and an MC block for performing the MC by using the IDCT-processed reference image and the current image, and reducing a magnitude of a motion vector and a range of the MC at a ratio of N:8.
