The present invention generally relates to methods of treating hypertension (HTN) in patients in need thereof wherein the patient optionally further suffers from chronic kidney disease (CKD) or Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The invention also relates to methods of treating hyperkalemia in a patient in need thereof, wherein the patient suffers from CKD, T2DM or HTN and are optionally being treated with an effective amount of a renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) agent. The invention also relates to methods of treating kidney disease in a patient in need thereof, wherein the patient is optionally being treated with an effective amount of a renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) agent. The methods can comprise administering an effective amount of a potassium-binding agent to the patient to lower the patient's blood pressure and/or increase or stabilize the patient's kidney function.

The present invention relates to a hydrous gel sheet including at least two laminated layers of a body-side surface layer and an environment-side surface layer, each of which is made of a hydrogel obtained from the reaction of polyacrylic acid or a salt thereof and multivalent metal ions, wherein the polyacrylic acid or the salt thereof used for forming a gel matrix of the environment-side surface layer is greater in weight-average molecular weight than the polyacrylic acid or the salt thereof used for forming a gel matrix of the body-side surface layer. Since a support body such as a nonwoven fabric is not used for the environment-side surface, but rather a support body made of hydrous gel is formed on the environment-side surface, the adhesive hydrous gel sheet according to the present invention, which is used for adhering to the human body, has excellent wear and handling properties as well as excellent stretching and deformation-absorbing properties, and also exhibits an improved appearance, aging stability, and durability.

The subject invention is a method and material for removing fluid from the intestinal tract of a host and may be useful in treating animals or human patients suffering from fluid overload states. In one embodiment, the subject method involves ingesting an enterically coated non-systemic, non-toxic, non-digestible, water absorbing polymer which absorbs fluid while passing through the intestinal tract. The polymer is excreted in the feces wherein the polymer and absorbed fluid is removed from the body. Preferred polymers include super absorbent acrylic acid polymers, preferably provided in bead form. The polymers may include functional groups for selectively removing blood borne waste products, e.g. urea, from the G.I. tract.
