An article comprising a thermoformed dual matrix composite is also disclosed, wherein the composite exhibits a time to peak release, as measured by FAR 25.853 (OSU test), a 2 minute total heat release, as measured by FAR 25.853 (OSU test), and an NBS optical smoke density of less than 200 at 4 minutes, determined in accordance with ASTM E-662 (FAR/JAR 25.853).

A low smoke density thermoplastic composition comprising, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic composition, 70 to 95 wt % of a polycarbonate copolymer comprising first repeating units and second repeating units, wherein the first repeating units are not the same as the second repeating units, and wherein the first repeating units are bisphenol carbonate units of the formula wherein Ra and Rb are each independently C1-12 alkyl, C1-12 alkenyl, C3-8 cycloalkyl, or C1-12 alkoxy, p and q are each independently 0 to 4, and Xa is a single bond, -O-, -S-, -S(O)-, -S(O)2-, -C(O)-, a C1-11 alkylidene of formula -C(Rc)(Rd)- wherein Rc and Rd are each independently hydrogen or C1-10 alkyl, or a group of the formula -C(=Re)- wherein Re is a divalent C1-10 hydrocarbon group; and the second repeating units comprise bisphenol carbonate units that are not the same as the first repeating bisphenol carbonate units, siloxane units, arylate ester units, or a combination of arylate ester units and siloxane units; and 5 to 30 wt % of a polyetherimide based on the weight of the composition, wherein an article molded from the composition has a smoke density (Ds-4) value of equal to or less than 300 as measured by ISO 5659-2 on a 3 mm thick plaque.

A composition is prepared by oxidative copolymerization of specific amounts of 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2,3,6-trimethylphenol, and a hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane. The composition exhibits an increased heat resistance relative to a corresponding composition prepared by copolymerizing 2,6-dimethylphenol and hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane, without 2,3,6-trimethylphenol. The composition is useful as a flame-retardant additive in polymer compositions that require high heat resistance.

A composition useful for the injection molding of fluid engineering parts includes specific amounts of a high molecular weight poly(phenylene ether), a polystyrene, and glass fibers. The composition provides improved hydrostability and reduces or eliminates the butadiene monomer that is present in comparative compositions containing rubber-modified polystyrene. Fluid engineering articles prepared from the composition are described.

The disclosure relates to a process that includes blending a polyimide resin and a primary alky amine organic compound to produce an aryl amine functionalized polyimide, having aryl amine functionality in excess of any anhydride functionality. The polyimide resin can have a weight average molecular weight (Mw) from 5,000 to 100,000 daltons. The organic compound can include at least one primary aliphatic amine without a direct linkage of a nitrogen to an aryl group and without a functionality selected from a halogen functionality, a hydroxyl functionality, a sulfonic acid functionality, a sulfonic acid salt functionality, and combinations thereof. The disclosure also relates to alkyl imide functionalized polyimides also with aryl amine functionalized polyimides, having aryl amine functionality in excess of any anhydride functionality and articles produced therefrom.

A poly(aryl ether sulfone) comprises units of formula (I): wherein Ar 1 is a divalent C 6 -C 15 aromatic group, Ar 2 is a divalent C 6 -C 15 aromatic group, Ar 3 is a divalent C 6 -C 15 aromatic group, and n is greater than 1; and a terminal group of formula (II) derived from a monofunctional phenoxide wherein is X is a hydrogen atom or an organic substituent having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; wherein the poly(aryl ether sulfone) has a hydroxyl group content greater than 0 and less than 50 parts per million (ppm), a glass transition temperature of 180 to 290°C, a weight average molecular weight of 20,000 to 100,000, a halogen content of greater than 0 and less than 3000 ppm. The poly(aryl ether sulfone) can have a thermal stability factor greater than or equal to 90%. The poly(aryl ether sulfone) is free of methoxy groups.
