A prosthetic foot (1) incorporates a foot keel (2) and a calf shank (6) connected to the foot keel to form an ankle joint area of the prosthetic foot (1). The foot keel (2) has forefoot (3) and hindfoot (4) portions and a relatively long midfoot portion (5) extending between and upwardly arched from the forefoot (3) and midfoot hindfoot (4) portions. The calf shank (6) includes a downward convexly curved lower end (7) which is attached at a portion thereof to the keel midfoot portion (5) by way of an adjustable fastener (8) arrangement. The foot has biplanar motion capability and, in a preferred form, also has high low dynamic response characteristics. The adjustable fastener (8) arrangement permits adjustment of the alignment of the calf shank (6) and the foot keel (2) with respect to one another in the longitudinal direction of the foot keel (2) for tuning the performance of the prosthetic foot (1).

The invention relates to a method for controlling an orthopedic joint of a lower extremity in at least one degree of freedom by means of an adjustable actuator for adjusting an orthopedic apparatus to walking situations that differ from walking on a plane. Said orthopedic apparatus comprises top connecting means to a limb and an orthopedic element that is hingedly arranged distal to the connecting means. The method encompasses the following steps: - several parameters (A) of the orthopedic apparatus are sensed by means of sensors; - the sensed parameters are compared with criteria (K) that have been established based on several parameters and/or parameter curves and are stored in a computer unit; - a criterion is selected that is suitable on the basis of the determined parameters and/or parameter curves; and - resistances to movements, extents of movements, driving forces, and/or the progresses thereof are adjusted in accordance with the selected criterion in order to control special functions (5) that differ from walking on a plane.

Accordingly, the resistance produced by the drag generating means in accordance with an increase of knee angle is increased. The first torque T1 at the first stage of initial period of bend of knee joint is made small, while the second torque T2 at the second stage of final period of the further advanced bend of knee joint is made large, thereby satisfying a relation of T1 ≤ T2, as different from conventional ones.

A self-aligning prosthetic foot and ankle assembly has an ankle unit (16) pivotally mounting a foot component (10). The ankle unit contains an hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly having a piston (28) which is linearly movable within a cylinder (26). The axis of the cylinder is coincident with a shin axis defined by a shin connection interface (20) on the ankle unit. Bypass passages (36) containing damping resistance control valves provide continuous hydraulic damping of dorsi and plantar ankle flexion, the unit being such that, over the major part of the range of damped movement, there is no resilient biasing in either the dorsi or the plantar direction. This confers a number of advantages, including stabilisation of standing, balance control, and improved stair-walking and ramp-walking.

Disclosed herein a prosthetic or orthotic device having a joint portion and a compliant transmission assembly in operational communication with the joint portion. The device restores the normal capabilities and natural dynamics of a healthy joint for common activities. The compliant transmission assembly includes a compliant element. The compliant transmission assembly absorbs energy when a torque is applied between a prosthetic or orthotic device portion and another adjacent device portion or the adjacent limb segment of the user. The compliant element of the invention absorbs energy during flexion of a joint for the dampening thereof and releases this energy during extension of the joint for assistance thereof. Also disclosed herein is an actuator assembly, a torque sensor and an actuator locking device as well as a method for determining the torque of such prosthetic and orthotic devices.

The invention relates to an active orthesis (Powered Gait Orthosis, PGO) which reinforces the strength of the wearer, whereby the above can introduce additional force components into the body of the wearer by means of the integrated actuators. The force transmission occurs by means of a tensile non-rigid structure. The actions of the actuator mechanism (3) are controlled by electromyographical measurements at the extremity to be supported, whereby a simultaneous force reinforcement of the supported limbs is possible.
