The invention relates to a prosthesis for replacing a joint connection in which identically polarized magnetic fields of the condyle (10), joint cavity (12), and joint collar (14) are superimposed on each other in such a way that the repulsive forces generate a suspended state of the condyle (10) in the bearing and the damping effect is maximized. The invention also relates to a method for replacing a bone joint of a mammal. In said method, the prosthesis is fastened to the joint bone, and repulsive forces generate a levitated state of the condyle (10) under load.

A composite elastic material useful for prosthetic applications is constituted of at least one cured silicone elastomer layer (12) containing silicone oil and hollow microspheres (28) dispersed throughout the elastomer layer (12). An elasticized fabric layer (14) may be intimately bonded to one side of the silicone elastomer layer (12) and the composite elastic material may be incorporated in various prosthetic appliances, including suction liners and sealing sleeves. When used in a suction liner, the composite elastic material may be molded to provide a thicker anterior wall (50) and a thinner posterior wall (54) with a smooth transition between the anterior and posterior walls. The composite elastic material covered with an elasticized fabric may be used as a sealing sleeve between a prosthetic device and a residual limb. The composite elastic material may contain one or more skin treating agents blended into the silicone elastomer.

A system and method for molding the shell of a medical device or other molded article is disclosed. The system includes a multi-axis rotational molding machine (50) in which a mold (100) is mounted. The mold (100) has a cavity (60) in the shape of the article to be molded. The mold (100) seals to hold a vacuum. In operation, silicone or other molding material is inserted into the mold (100), vacuum is applied to the mold (100), the mold (100) is rotated about at least two axes (A, B) and a molding material coats the inside walls of the mold (100) to form the shell or other desired article. A rotationally molded medical article is also disclosed.
