A method of making the surface of a base material ultrahydrophilic which comprises the step of coating the surface with a layer containing photocatalytic semiconductor material such as titania and the step of photoexciting the photocatalytic material to adjust the angle of contact of the surface of the above layer with water to about 10° or less. When this method is applied to the surface of a base material such as mirror, lens or windowpane, the growth of waterdrops is prevented and the base material becomes highly antifogging. The articles treated by this method do not undergo any deposition of contaminants on the surfaces thereof and are readily cleaned by rainfall or washing with water.

The invention relates to a method for forming a transparent conductive thin film of In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 on a surface of a plastics substrate of less heat resistance other than that of glass, ceramics, etc. When an In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 precursor sol is produced by hydrolyzing and polymerizing a solution containing indium alkoxide and tin alkoxide, either tri-s-butoxyindium or tri-t-butoxyindium is used as the indium alkoxide. water is added to the solution containing indium alkoxide and tin alkoxide at a temperature of not higher than -20°C. The obtained In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 precursor sol is applied to a surface of a substrate to form a gel film, then the gel film is either irradiated with an ultraviolet beam of which wave length is not longer than 360 nm, or irradiated with an ultraviolet beam of which wave length is not longer than 260 nm and further irradiated with a laser beam of which wave length is not longer than 360 nm, to crystallize the gel forming the thin film, whereby an In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 thin film having a conductivity is formed on the surface of the substrate.

A composition for application to a substrate to form a an electrically conductive coating thereon. The composition includes a sol-gel solution filled with a conductive powder. The coating may be conductive or resistive depending on the application. A process is provided for applying such a coating by mixing a sol-gel solution with up to about 90 % by weight of the solution of a conductive powder selected from the group consisting of ceramics, inter-ceramics, semi-conductors and metals so as to provide a uniform stable dispersion. The stable dispersion is applied to substrate and the coated substrate is fired at a temperature sufficient to remove organic constituents and to produce at least a partially conductive film on the substrate. A heating device is also provided which is a product of the above process.

The invention relates to a ceramic component (e.g. a varistor) comprising a protective layer (4) made of ceramic materials, which contain small amounts of lead and which are based on perovskite structures, whereby the lead is completely or partially replaced by bismuth. Titanates are also considered which comprise a structure of phases of the Aurivillius type, whereby no lead whatsoever is present. Additionally considered are compounds which have pyrochlore structures and which contain bismuth and, optionally, an element of the rare earths. The ceramic component is resistant against the acids used during the electrodeposition of the contact layers (SMD capability) due to the provision of the protective layer (4) that contains small amounts of lead.

The invention relates to a method for producing glazed articles, such as tiles, having improved properties, as well as to these articles per se. More in particular, the invention relates to glazed ceramic articles, such as glazed tiles, having a glossy appearance and to a method for preparing these articles. According to the invention, glazed article having a temperature of at least 400°C are contacted with a metal containing precursor, whereby a metal oxide coating on said article is formed. The thus obtained articles are improved with respect to their coefficient of friction and/or abrasion resistance, whereas the gloss is maintained.
