The invention relates to a ferroelectric liquid-crystal display containing a ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixture, characterized in that the display is controlled with voltage pulses ≥0.9 ms. The display provided for by the invention is especially suited for applications in which the length of switching time is not critical. Such displays can be switched with the same voltage in a very wide range of temperatures, thus making it unnecessary for the voltage to be adjusted in line with the temperature. Potential applications include displays in chip cards, electronic pricing or display signs (shelf labels), PDAs (personal digital assistants) and pagers.

An anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell which has characteristics of high-speed response and broad visual field angle and generates no image persistence. This anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is constituted by an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material narrowly held between a pair of parallel substrates. The anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material injected between the parallel substrates has such a characteristic that when a sine voltage value obtained by changing a reference frequency is applied to the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell, an imaginary part of a complex dielectric constant obtained by carrying out Fourier transform of an output voltage value outputted from the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell has no maximum value within a range of reference frequency of 100 Hz to 5 kHz. In other words, this characteristic is equivalent to such a characteristic that when a real part and an imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant are plotted by Cole-Cole plot for every frequency, a curve having no maximum value within the range of reference frequency of 100 Hz to 5kHz is obtained.

There is disclosed herein a ferroelectric liquid crystal electro-optical apparatus of the matrix type comprising a liquid crystal cell having first and second electrode substrates which include n striped line electrodes and m striped column electrodes, respectively, facing at right angles each other. A conductive line (11) is provided between adjacent signal electrodes (3) and adjacent scanning electrodes (5) so that only the longitudinal side faces of the conductive line are in contact with the longitudinal side faces of the respective electrodes. Each electrode (3) and conductive lines (11) adjacent to the electrode form a hybrid electrode, and an insulating light-blocking member (13) is formed between adjacent hybrid electrodes. The conductive line includes a first layer (11a) in contact with the light-transmissive substrate, a second layer (11b) placed on the first layer, and a topmost third layer (11c). The first layer is made of a conductive material such as indium tin oxide and tantalum, which is highly adhesive to the light-transmissive substrate. This structure ensures the flatness of the conductive lines, and prevents peeled-off conductive lines. The invention also provides a method of fabricating such an electrode substrate.
