It is provided a method for synchronizing content playback at the presentation level, wherein, a first content is presented on a first device and a second content that is the same as or correlated with the first content is presented on a second device. The method comprises steps of receiving status messages from the first device and the second device, wherein the status messages comprise information about playback positions of the first content and the second content currently being playbacked at the presentation level of the first device and the second device; and in response to differences between playback positions of the first content and the second content comprised in the status messages being above a threshold value, performing adjustment to maintain difference of playback positions of the first content and the second content at the presentation level of the first device and the second device below the threshold value.

The method of transmitting video to one or more recipient terminals comprises: transmitting a stream of inter frame encoded video data to a recipient terminal; during ongoing transmission of the stream to the recipient terminal, receiving a request signal from that recipient terminal; and in response to the request signal, transmitting alternatively encoded video data to the recipient terminal in association with the inter frame encoded video data.

When a power-on state is set and when a connection of a monitor device (TV) is confirmed using an HPD line, a CPU 211A determines the necessity of an update. When received image data is 3D image data and when the monitor device is 3D-compatible, an update process is performed. An update manager 271 is connected to a download server 243, and downloads update digital interface control software from the download server 243 to install it into an HDMI controller 273. Accordingly, the version of the HDMI transmitting unit 206A is set to HDMI 1.4, so that the 3D image data can be handled.

To display a plurality of video images as multiple screens in one screen, the quality of a video image corresponding to a video input section of an image pickup section to be controlled for controlling the image taking angle of view, etc., can be enhanced as compared with that of any other and the operability at the image pickup section control time is improved. A client PC 40 receives video data distributed from a plurality of camera units 20 and 30 and displays a plurality of video images as multiple screens on a screen of a display 60. At this time, the reception rate of the video data distributed from the camera unit 20 to be controlled in pan, tilt, etc., is increased and the reception rate of the video data distributed from the different camera unit 30 is decreased, whereby the frame rate of a split screen for displaying the video image picked up by the camera unit 20 to be controlled is made higher than the frame rate of the different camera unit and it is made possible to visually recognize the video image clearly during the camera control.

A computer-implemented system and method are described for performing video compression. For example, a method according to one embodiment comprises: encoding a plurality of video frames or portions thereof according to a first encoding format, the first encoding format being optimized for transmission to a client device over a current communication channel; transmitting the plurality of encoded video frames or portions to the client device over the communication channel; concurrently encoding the first plurality of video frames according to a second encoding format, the second encoding format having a relatively higher-quality compressed video and/or a lower compression ratio than the first encoding format; storing the first plurality of video frames encoded in the second encoding format on a storage device; and making the first plurality of video frames encoded in the second encoding format available to the client device and other client devices for playback of the video stream.

The distribution of content over a peer to peer (P2P) network can be improved by utilizing at least one broadcast of the content in order to quickly seed the P2P network. When content is first to be distributed across the network, a broadcast can be scheduled that each peer device with broadcast receiving capability and within range of the broadcast is able to receive. As soon as a peer device receives at least a portion of the broadcast content, that peer can begin redistributing the content across the P2P network. Any errors or missing portions of the received broadcast content can be corrected by requesting a copy of the missing or incorrect portion from another peer on the P2P network.
