A hydraulic circuit (30) on the discharge side of a revolution-sensing hydraulic pump (3) connected to the input shaft (2b) of auxiliary speed-changing gears (1) is connected to one end of an automatic speed-changing valve (8) and the other end of the valve (8) is connected to the hydraulic circuit (30) on the discharge side of the pump (3) through an orifice (7). The valve (8) is controlled by the difference in pressure between a discharge oil of the pump (3) and another oil having passed the orifice (7) and, by changing over an automatic two-stage speed-changing valve (6) with the pilot pressure from the valve (8), a two-stage clutch can be changed over without damage to the hydraulic motor.

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling a structure in which electronic pressure control valves (21-24) are connected separately to the clutches (H, L, 1st, 2nd) in a transmission having a two-step clutch system consisting of main speed change gears (1st, 2nd) and auxiliary speed change gears (H, L) to enable each clutch to be controlled independently. In the case where a discharge rate of a pump at the time of starting the engine is not sufficiently high with both auxiliary clutches and main clutches required to be engaged, the speed change is done by supplying a hydraulic pressure at staggered time to the clutches (H, L) in the main speed change gear and the clutches (1st, 2nd) in the auxiliary speed change gear so that the supply of a hydraulic pressure to the main clutches is started after the filling of the auxiliary clutches has been completed, whereby variations in the filling time, which is ascribed to a decrease in the discharge rate of the pump, are minimized.

An improved method of scheduling ratio shifting in a vehicle transmission adaptively adjusts the normal shift schedule to avoid shift-related overheating of the torque transmitting devices of the transmission. In normal operation, transmission shifting is scheduled by comparing measured vehicle speed and engine throttle position values with predefined load data. In the background, the transmission control unit determines the cumulative thermal energy stored in the torque transmitting devices. If excessive energy is indicated, the normal shift schedule is modified to allow extended operation in the lower speed ratios. When the cumulative energy indication returns to a normal level, normal shift scheduling is resumed.

A shift valve (24) comprises a spool (224) having a downshift position for establishing a lower speed ratio and an upshift position for establishing a higher speed ratio, a plug (225), and a spring (324) between the spool and plug. The spool has a pressure acting area which governor pressure acts on, while the plug has a pressure acting area which throttle pressure acts on. At low throttle pressures, the spool moves from the downshift position to the upshift position when a predetermined vehicle speed is attained. At higher throttle pressures, the spool moves between the downshift and upshift position depending upon the governor pressure and throttle pressure. The shift valve has a port formed therein which admits a downshift position hold signal fluid pressure (i.e., line pressure) between the spool and plug so as to hold the spool to the downshift position thereof.
