A photosensitive composition suitable for forming black matrix screens and fluorescent screens of color cathode-ray tubes and having such a high photosensitivity as to enable a remarkable shortening of the exposure time and a high stability even after the lapse of time. To form a plurality of stripe-like phosphor layers on a surface of a substrate in forming a plasma display panel, the surface having a plurality of parallel ribs disposed thereon and grooves defined between pairs of adjacent ribs, the following steps are carried out: providing a filamentary body formed from a phosphor paste composed of a phosphor substance and a first synthetic resin; placing a moulded filamentary body in each groove; filling the grooves with a solvent optionally containing a second synthetic resin compatible with the first synthetic resin; and conducting a sintering treatment of the substrate to form the phosphor layers in the grooves. An apparatus for this purpose has a mounting base (51) for mounting thereon a substrate (21) having a plurality of parallel ribs (r) disposed thereon and grooves (g) defined between pairs of adjacent ribs, and a supplier (53) for supplying a filamentary body (54) into the grooves, the filamentary body being made of a phosphor substance and a synthetic resin.

The method has application to phosphor screens in cathode ray tubes and plasma display panels for improving their uniformity of brightness and contrast.

A process for the preparation of an image is provided, which comprises exposing to light a layer of a composition which changes its stickiness when irradiated with active light, spraying a particulate image-forming material on to the layer, removing the particulate matter which has not been attached to the layer, and then heating the layer to fix the particulate image-forming to the substrate. This process is suitable for the patterning of not only a fluorescent substance for plasma display but also a light-impermeable or sparingly light-permeable material to which photolithography has heretofore been difficultly applied. Furthermore, the thickness of the image-forming material layer can be easily varied by properly selecting the grain diameter of the image-forming material.

A flat panel device (300) includes a spacer (308) for providing internal support. The spacer can be made of ceramic or glass-ceramic. Spacer surfaces exposed within the flat panel device are treated to reduce secondary emissions and prevent charging of the spacer surfaces. A light-emitting structure contains a main section (302), a pattern of dark ridges (314) situated along the main section, and a plurality of electron-activated light-emissive regions (313) situated in spaces between the ridges. The dark ridges extend further away from the main section than the light-emissive regions to form a raised black matrix. When the light-emitting structure is used in an optical display, the raised black matrix contacts spacers (308) and, in so doing, protects the light-emissive regions from being damaged. The light-emitting structure can be formed according to various techniques of the invention.
