Abstract:
The invention relates to a silencer (1) which is for an exhaust gas installation (2) of a combustion engine, particularly of a motor vehicle, and which comprises a silencer housing (3) that encloses a housing inner chamber (5), and at least one hollow body (4) in a half shell construction that is arranged in said housing inner chamber (5) and that conducts exhaust gas, the two half shells (14, 15) of the hollow body (4) being fixed to each other in the region of a separating plane (16). The assembly of the silencer (1) and hollow body (4) can be simplified if the two half shells (14, 15) are fixed to one another using fixing elements (17, 18) that are designed directly on the half shells (14, 15).

Abstract:
An exhaust silencer assembly includes an exhaust duct (22A;22B) and an exhaust silencer (20A;20B). The exhaust silencer is disposed about the exhaust duct and has a plurality of solid baffles (24a-24f;34a-34e;46) and at least one perforated baffle (26;38). The exhaust silencer assembly is disposed downstream of an auxiliary power unit (16A;16B) and at least partially attenuates the downstream noise of the combustion gases that result from operation of the auxiliary power unit. In one embodiment, at least one of the plurality of solid baffles is disposed to extend axially between generally radially extending solid baffles, perforated baffle(s), or partially perforated baffles. The axially extending solid baffle allows for cavity depth variation in the silencer to optimize tuning of particular frequencies from the auxiliary power unit.
Abstract:
(Problem) To provide an exhaust pipe part and an exhaust apparatus for an internal combustion engine which can make unnecessary the muffler used in the conventional apparatus, and make small in size a sound deadening device mounted on the part of the exhaust pipe while reducing exhaust noises, and can reduce the weight and the production cost thereof. (Solving Means) An tail pipe part 41 is provided on a tail pipe 28 to constitute part of the tail pipe 28, and has a hollow member 42 connected with the tail pipe 28 in axial alignment with the tail pipe 28 to be positioned within an area covering a node portion in a sound pressure distribution of an air column resonance caused in the tail pipe 28, and a short pipe 43 provided in the hollow member 42 and having a predetermined length to extend in the axial direction of the tail pipe 28, the short pipe 43 having an open end 43a at the upstream end thereof and a closed end at the downstream end thereof, the closed end being constituted by a bottom plate 43b positioned at almost the same position as that of the node portion in the sound pressure distribution of a standing wave formed by the air column resonance caused in the tail pipe 28.
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine is capable of improving cleaning efficiency by preventing an increase in the temperature of the exhaust gas to lessen the deterioration of the catalyst. The internal combustion engine 1 includes a convergent section 32, a divergent section 33, and a branch section 21. The branch section 21 branches a shock wave 35, propagating in a downstream direction at a higher velocity than exhaust gas 36 flowing into an exhaust path 16 from a combustion chamber 10 when an exhaust valve 9 is opened, from a portion of the exhaust path 16 which is upstream with respect to the divergent section 33, and propagates the shock wave 35 back to the exhaust path 16. The exhaust gas 36 is caused to pass the convergent section 32 and to collide against the shock wave 35 between the branch section 21 and the divergent section 33, thus to increase the pressure of the exhaust gas 36 in the convergent section 32. Such exhaust gas 36 is caused to pass the divergent section 33 to generate a new shock wave 35b and thus to decrease the temperature of the exhaust gas. A catalyst 41 of an exhaust cleaning device 40 is provided in a portion of the exhaust path 16 which is downstream with respect to the divergent section 33.
