Making mats using glass fibers having a diameter of about 13 +/- 3 microns, bound with a binder formed from a homopolymer or a copolymer of polyacrylic acid and a polyol produces fibrous nonwoven mats having high tensile strength and also an unexpected high flame resistance considering the amount of oxygen in the binder. Mats of the present invention pass the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Flammability Test. Tabor stiffness of these mats is greater than about 40, preferably greater than about 50 and most preferably greater than about 55. Air permeability of the mats is preferably within the range of about 500 to about 800 CFM/sq. ft. Methods of making the mat are also disclosed.

The invention concerns an insulating product based on mineral wool sized with a binder based on phenol-formaldehyde resin, wherein the binder comprises in a mixture: 60 to 90 parts by weight of a phenol-formaldehyde resol having a free formaldehyde rate not more than 25 wt. % relative to the resin dry weight and a proportion of free phenol not more than 2.5 wt. % relative to the resin dry weight obtained by condensation in basic medium of phenol (P) and of formaldehyde (F) in a F/P mol ratio of the order of 2.5 to 4 until the condensation product neutralised by sulphuric acid has a dilutability in water higher than 500 % and not more than 1500 %; 10 to 40 parts of urea. Said sizing composition is useful for making insulating products reducing ammonia emissions on the production line.

A composition for the promotion of adhesion between a rubber formulation and a textile substrate is provided. The inventive composition comprises either a mixture of specific amine functional silanes and organo-functional silanes having reactive groups or groups with an affinity for rubber. The inventive method entails the use of the inventive composition or a silane compound having both an amine moiety and a reactive group having an affinity for rubber formulations, particularly an unsaturated carbon-carbon bond. The composition may be utilized to adhere any standard reinforcement-type textile, such as polyester or polyamide, to a standard rubber composition, such as SBR, NBR, or EPDM. A method for adhering textiles to rubber formulations is also provided involving a pre-dip, -spray, -coat, and the like, of the inventive composition on a reinforcement-type textile surface followed by the contacting of the rubber formulation. Optionally, and preferably, the process involves the extra utilization of resorcinol-formaldehyde latex as an effective bonding agent to improve the adhesion between the two layers. The resulting textile-reinforced rubber product may be utilized as an automobile fan or timing belt, an automobile tire component, and any other rubber article which requires long-lasting, durable textile reinforcement.

Methods of making nonwoven mats having good strength after being scored and folded and particularly useful in making lightweight, compressible ceiling panels are disclosed. The mats also have excellent flame resistance. The mats include a blend comprising a major portion of glass fibers and a minor portion of man-made polymer fibers, the fibers being bound together with a cured binder containing a homopolymer or copolymer of polyacrylic acid and a polyol. The binder bonding the mat together can be cured to only a "B" stage to produce thermoformable mats or more fully cured to produce mats having the properties described above.
