The invention also provides a method of manufacturing a tool, a method of moulding articles using such a tool, and elastomeric material for use in forming a tool. One particular application of the tools of the present invention is in the formation or manufacture of moulded articles using curable, resinous composite materials.

The present invention is directed to a method for the production of highly demanded pieces at low cost. The method is especially well suited for deep drawing dies, but also any other type of tooling. It is also very well suited for machine components of big dimensions and with high mechanical solicitations, like rotors and cages in wind mills and other big machines. The pieces or tools are cast with a low cost ceramic, like a high resistance concrete (with special mention to HPC or UHPC) or a low water admixture castable or any other low cost high mechanical resistance material (low cost ceramics or high resistance polymers arc especially suited). Once cast, the working surface of the die or piece is coated with a metal, an intermetallic or a high performance ceramic. Projection or deposition techniques are used to obtain the high value working surface. Optionally localized fusion treatments (IR, laser, HDIR or any other localized energy source) are applied to obtain full density on the surface. Also welding, laser deposition or any other deposition by melting can be applied (often on top of a deposited or projected intermediate layer). Different layers can be applied, and trough proper masking a specific surface functionality can be attained. Rolls, jaws, bearing supports, machine benches and other structural parts and any other highly solicited part can be obtained at low cost by means of the present invention.

The invention provides a method of preparing a preform for manufacture of a polymer holey optical fibre comprising casting a preform body in a mould from a suitable material, said mould including at least one protrusion adapted to form a corresponding hole within the preform, and subsequently separating the preform body and mould. The invention also provides a method of preparing a preform for manufacture of a polymeric holey optical fibre comprising separately casting one or more elements of a preform in respective mould(s) from a suitable material, and separating said elements from said respective mould(s) and combining said elements to construct a preform having a plurality of holes therein, each hole being formed in an element or formed by the combination of two or more elements.

The invention relates to a casting mould (1) for cylindrical cast resin coils, said mould extending along an axle (2) and comprising an outer casting mould mantle (2,28) which embodies a casting mould mantle wall (3,27) that is bent in a tubular manner, surrounds a cylindrical casting chamber (7,37), and comprises a filling gap, by which means the casting chamber (7,37) can be filled with cast resin. The aim of the invention is to enable cast resin coils having different outer circumferences to be cast by means of said casting mould at a low cost. To this end, a casting mould mantle extension element (36) is embodied in such a way that it can be inserted into the casting mould mantle (2,28) on the detached connection piece (10) in order to extend the casting mould mantle (2,28). A thermoforming apparatus having a mould 108 with an internal vacuum chamber 111 and a quench 110 for cooling a thermoplastic sheet 104 while it remains on the mould. Because the quench cools the sheet, conventional cooling lines are eliminated from the mould. A preferred process of using the thermoforming apparatus includes drawing a heated sheet 104 over the mould 108, creating a partial vacuum in the vacuum chamber 111 of the mould to maintain the sheet on the mould and quenching the sheet on the mould in a quenching tank 113. A preferred process of manufacturing a mould with an interior vacuum chamber includes forming an impression of the mould in a casting media, suspending a vacuum line or vacuum cabinet within the impression and pouring molten material around the vacuum line or vacuum cabinet to form the mould at least partially surrounding the vacuum line or vacuum cabinet. Vacuum holes are drilled through the mould from the mould face to the vacuum chamber.
