摘要: The invention relates to a method of assembling a structure, particularly those structures requiring very tight tolerances. The structure may be assembled by positioning shim material (20) on at least part of a sub-structure (2), curing the shim material (20) in situ, machining the cured shim material (20) to a desired thickness, and then assembling outer layer parts (4, 8) to the sub-structure such that the shim material is situated between the sub-structure and the outer parts. The shim material may be machined to different thicknesses at different locations on the sub-structure, so that, when assembled, the outer layer parts together conform to a predetermined profile. This is especially advantageous in the manufacture of airframes, where the outer layer panels must provide a smooth surface to avoid unwanted aerodynamic effects.

摘要: The invention relates to a shim material (20) for use in assembling structures and a method of producing the shim material.
The shim material is machinable and comprises at least a resin, a filler and a curing agent, and is capable of being cured at a temperature of below 80°C.
The shim material is produced by heating the resin to at least 80°C, adding the filler to the resin, cooling the resin to below 60°C, adding a curing agent to the resin, and then forming the resin into a sheet of desired thickness.
Structures, such as airframe structures may be assembled using the shim material by positioning shim material on at least part of a sub-structure (2), curing the shim material in situ, machining the cured shim material to a desired thickness, and then assembling outer layer (4,8) parts to the sub-structure with the shim material between structure and parts.

摘要: A method of moulding an article from prepreg including laying a sheet of prepreg on a mould to conform with the mould includes also treating the resin of the prepreg to increase its viscosity to a predetermined value which, when the sheet is cured by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat results in a reduction in voids within the laminate and pits on the moulded surface as compared with a conventional prepreg moulding technique, curing the resin and removing the cured or partially cured article from the mould. The treatment of the resin may be achieved by applying heat to the resin of the prepreg amending its formulation or any other appropriate method.

摘要: A method of moulding a composite material which includes a fibre reinforcement within a resin comprises laying alternately on a mould first and second layers of fibre material pre-impregnated with uncured resin, where the resin content of the first layer is different from that of the second layer and the combination of layers gives the desired overall total volume fraction of fibres and resin in the laminate, enclosing the layers within an impervious membrane, evacuating the membrane and applying heat to the layers to flow gellate and at least partially cure the resin and during the process to allow released gasses and vapours to flow along the layers of lower resin content towards the membrane for subsequent evaluation.
