By providing a high speed welding system (27) for fusing adjacent foam profiles (21) in a continuous manufacturing operation (20), a unique, integrated, foam welding and profile manufacturing system is attained which is capable of producing virtually any desired foam product (22) from foam extrusions without requiring the use of expensive molds or forming components, and which significantly reduces expensive scrap found in prior art construction systems. In accordance with the teaching of the present invention, any desired cross-sectional shape or configuration is capable of being manufactured in fully automated, high-volume, rapid production conditions, with virtual ease and simplicity. Furthermore, by employing the present invention, foam profiles which previously were unattainable due to their structural configurations, are quickly and easily constructed in a mass production operation.

A cabinet for a refrigerator is formed from a twin sheet thermoformed panel (1) divided into a plurality of wall sections (8, 9, 10) by seams (6) where the twin sheets (2, 3) contact. The panel is folded to form the rear (10) and two side walls (8, 9) of a refrigerator cabinet, and top end cap and a base plinth are fitted to retain the walls in position. Refrigeration system components are carried on the base plinth. The walls (8, 9) and back (10) are secured by having their upper and lower edges (25, 30) fitted within peripheral channels (28, 29) on the top end cap (20) and the base plinth (21). Additionally they may be further secured by fusing contacting portions (65, 76) of the inner sheet of the panel in the region adjacent folded seams (6). The panel is preferably filled with rigid insulating foam while still supported on the thermoforming mould. The seams (6) are preferably provided on the back face (61) of the cabinet, spaced from the corners between side and rear faces, providing improved aesthetics with the fold lines hidden. An improved heater for softening seams between wall sections is disclosed.

When welding together two thermoplastic synthetic resin panels (B1, B2), at least portions of the panels (B1, B2) are put one on top of the other to form an overlapping section, an head (6C) and a work support block (7C) are applied to the opposite surfaces of the overlapping section, respectively, and the head (6C) is driven to generate ultrasonic waves, compressing the overlapping section between the ultrasonic welding head (6C) and the work support block (7C). The overlapping section vibrates, generates frictional heat therein, and is welded under compression.

When this cavity structure is filled with the plastic, e.g. with a polymer mix, a through bead structure (8) that has a rivet effect is produced at the joint between the pieces (1, 2), which said bead structure, upon hardening, interconnects the pieces (1, 2) firmly.

Das Verfahren unterscheidet sich dadurch, dass über eine bestimmte Länge von jedem Rohrend ab die Isolierung (2) und das Mantelrohr (3) entfernt, die Rohrstücke in üblicher Weise verschweisst, Isolierung (22") und Schaleförmige Mantelteile (3,3") angebracht und die Schaleförmige Mantelteile und das Mantelrohr durch Stumpfschweissen, vorzugsweise als V-Schweissnaht, verbunden werden, zur Erreichung einer glatten Aussenmantel. Die Stumpfschweisse werden durch Extrusionsschweissen hergestellt, d.H. dass neues Material der Schweissfuge zugeführt und durch Wärme mit dem Basismaterial verschmolzen wird, wobei zunächst die Längsschweisse und darauf die Umfangsschweisse gemacht werden.
