Present invention relates to an apparatus to improve the riding feel of the vehicle when the rear wheels pass over a sporadic hollows or protrusions of a ground by altering the rear suspension characteristic, i.e. the spring constant and the damping force of the shock absorbers after such hollows or protrusions are detected by front wheels of the vehicle passing thereover and the detected hollow or protrusion is judged to exceed a predetermined size. Besides that, the present invention has another control measures to give a priority to the maintenance of the vehicle posutre when the driving condition is that need drivability and stability more than the riding comfort over the above-mentioned rear suspension characteristic alteration.

In this system for vehicle roll control, a plurality of actuator assemblies are provided, one corresponding to each one of the vehicle wheels and resiliently suspending it from the vehicle body. These actuator assemblies have pressure chambers, and each is adapted to increase or decrease the vehicle height at a location corresponding to its corresponding vehicle wheel as respective results of supplying or discharging of working fluid to or from its pressure chamber; they are controlled by duty ratio control. Working fluid supplying and discharging means are provided corresponding to the actuator assemblies arrd supply working fluid to and discharge working fluid from their working fluid chambers. A means senses the road speed of the vehicle, and a meanssensesthe steering angle of the vehicle. Vehicle height detection means are prov- idedforsensingthe heights of the vehicle wheels. A means for computing and control calculates the deviations of the actual detected wheel heights from standard wheel heights; when a certain condition is satisfied, it controls the working fluid supplying and discharging means according to a first duty ratio according to the deviations of the actual wheel heights, so as to maintain the deviations of the actual wheel heights within determinate ranges; and then it controls the working fluid supplying and discharging means in the reverse sense of supply and drain and according to a second duty ratio in a certain manner.

A vehicle suspension system in which a computer controls damping and spring forces to optimize ride and handling characteristics under a wide range of driving conditions. A controllable shock absorber connected between the wheel and frame of the vehicle includes a hydraulic sensor which provides signals to the computer which are representative of the position of the piston within the shock absorber. The computer utilizes these position signals to control compression and rebound hydraulic pressure regulators by continuously computing, utilizing programmed algorithms, compression and rebound damping forces that will yield the desired ride and handling characteristics. An air spring may be connected with the shock absorber for compression and rebound along the same axis. Pressure sensors and air pressure inlet and outlet valves are connected to the computer for adjusting the pressure within the air spring to provide the desired spring rate.

This invention relates to a rear height controller for a vehicle having a height adjuster between the body and a rear wheel. The controller includes a front height detector which detects a sporadic bump or dip of a road surface on which the vehicle is running by measuring the distance between the body and a front wheel. The front height data is sent to a bump or dip judgment section in which the height data from the right and the left height detectors is judged whether the data corresponds to a predetermined size of bump or dip. If the data is judged to correspond to a bump or dip of a predetermined size, the judgment section sends a signal to a rear height adjuster. If the right front wheel sinks into a dip, the left rear body height is lowered in order to keep the posture of the vehicle unchanged when the right rear wheel sinks into the dip. If the right front wheel rides onto a bump, the left rear body height is raised. Similarly the right rear body height is adjusted to compensate the movement of the opposite body height caused by dip or bump of the road surface. This controller maintains good vehicle control and stability when passing a sporadic dip or bump of a road surface.
